Transcripts of audio intercepted by Ukranian security services in which pro-Russian separatists discuss how they had shot down an airliner paint a chilling picture of what happened on the ground after Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crashed near the Russian border, killing all 298 people on board, including 27 Australians.
The audio points to the involvement of the rebels, who are believed to have Russian backing, in the crash.

We forget the current version of the 9K37 SAM system uses a missile that is actually more capable than the old S-75 Dvina (NATO code name SA-2 Guideline) system. As such, the 9K37 system is easily capable of shooting down a jet airliner flying at 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) altitude.
With the nationalities of 20 passengers still to be determined, this is the breakdown of people on board so far:
Netherlands: 173
Malaysia: 44
Australia: 27
Indonesia: 12
UK: 9
Germany: 4
Belgium: 4
Philippines: 3
Canada: 1
New Zealand: 1

Shoulder-fired rockets don't reach to 30K feet. The current thought is that it was a radar-guided rocket fired from a vehicle. At 30K, it probably takes a trained radar operator to distinguish between an airliner and a military transport, and it's unlikely the rebel operator was well trained.

Where are the names of the twenty “unknown” passengers, and why do we suspect that they were Americans?
Dumb question: Don’t international passengers have to show their passports to be allowed to board, and doesn’t this information go on the final manifest?
So that in the wake of a terrorist incident the destination country isn’t screaming at the airline, “Why did you let this person on the plane!!?”
