Russians Oblivious To Growing Anger Over MH17
sky.com ^ | July 20, 2014 | Katie Stallard

On a busy street in central Moscow, a well-dressed man stands yelling at the crowd: "Don't you understand? There will be a war!"

All around him, people walk by, wholly uninterested. It's a hot summer's day, they're enjoying the sun.

Save for a couple of tourists taking pictures, no-one pays much attention at all.

The friend of a friend who saw this, posted the news on Facebook.

Someone responded with a cartoon of Homer Simpson holding a sign that says "The End is Near".

There are people here who are genuinely concerned about the direction Russia is heading under Vladimir Putin, but they are very much in the minority.

Anyone watching Russian state TV (from which, according to a Levada Centre poll, an estimated 94% of population get their news) would have little idea of the weight of the international outrage building against their leader and the threat of serious sanctions to come.

Instead, they will be treated to a rundown of the "10 questions Ukraine's government must answer", and clips of Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, insisting that any accusation of Russian involvement is "unfounded" and that he "hasn't heard anything truthful from Kiev for months".

This will not surprise viewers who have spent those months listening to condemnation of the "junta" in Kiev, which they have regularly been told is controlled by fascists.

The morning after the crash, some Russian newspapers didn't even cover it.

The official state newspaper, Rossiskaya Gazeta, decided the loss of 298 lives was not its top story, leading instead with an "exclusive investigation" into what Russians eat and drink, the fate of flight MH17 relegated to the bottom of the page.

“Actually you haven’t backed up anything, and since one of your bizarre troll claims is that the broken and shattered Russia is stronger militarily than the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Germany, and all of the rest of these nations listed.

Throw that in with your absurd claims that we mist submit to Putin because he might go nuclear, go nuclear over what???

What is bigger today, that is bigger than it was during the Cold War when many of us here were serving in NATO, that requires the free world to submit to this hollow shell of Russia?

There is other oil in the world. It’ll be more expensive, but it does exist.

They’ll be fine. They’ll wait out the little temper tantrum from the West and things will return to normal.

Little temper tantrum? Good grief BobL, is their no depths you will sink to in your support of Putin?

You underestimate how much the media loves these kinds of stories, heck they just barely stopped endless reporting on the other missing Malaysian jet. This is not going to be some "temper tantrum". Putin has blood all over his hands for this and the pressure will continue ratcheting up to finally get Europeans to agree to actual serious sanctions against Putin's Russia.

Russia is basically self-sufficient in resources and can blow any country (including ours) off the map if they need to.

Do you even know what your talking about here? Russia is largely a basketcase with declining populations, rampant alcoholism, sky high abortion rates, etc. They are not self sufficient and if real sanctions are imposed they'd do serious damage to Putin's economy.

As to their military prowess. Russia has lots of nukes, so sure, they could blow up any country just like we can - but that isn't a serious option no matter what the consequences of their role in killing 298 innocent people on a civilian airliner. There is going to be hell to pay for this in the end that will amount to much more than a "temper tantrum". Russian media and people like yourself may not realize the ground will shift around your hero's feet, but it will happen.

The sad thing is...you know I’m right.

We ARE NOT going to start WW3 precisely because we have NO IDEA how it will end. We could get our jollies bombing Kosovo and Bosnia into submission, but we’re not about to try our luck against this weapon. No way.

And again, you know the outcome of all this huffing and puffing...nothing changes.

Sorry, meant to say natural gas. Importing it elsewhere takes some SERIOUS INFRASTRUCTURE and that takes years to build. They’re stuck.

The Europeans couldn’t even hold sanctions on Iraq and Iran, I doubt they’re willing to freeze this winter because of the airplane going down.

Actually their social issues are getting much better under Putin, which is one of reasons he’s so popular there.

Yeah, you are a troll, just stirring things up and posting nonsense, there is no hiding it when you start posting like that, while ignoring the facts.

I made my points...I’m done here. Nothing changes with regard to Russia.

Let’s check back in a week and then a month and see who’s right.

Russia has it’s hands full worrying about China colonizing parts of it, Russia is a true paper tiger when faced with the military might of the United States and the free world.

Of course I’m still trying to figure out what the guy thinks Russia finally wants WWIII in the first place.

“The immigrants settle not only in border areas but increasingly deeper into Russian territory, and some backlash is imminent. These developments raise several questions for Russia as to the migration’s impact, China’s long-term plans for Siberia, and potential Chinese dominance in the region.”

“International analysts have long hypothesized about the Russian Far East in the wake of increasing Chinese inflow. Some conjecture that Chinese economic control over these areas is not an “if” but a “when” issue. Others argue that increased Chinese activity in Siberia is the natural consequence of Sino-Russian cooperation and that the idea of Chinese expansionism is somewhat exaggerated. A third group maintains that while China has long-term goals to dominate the region, it has no precise plan and timetable.”

If Russia wants to disappear, the can take on NATO in a war, you seem to forget that we can nuke them back to the stone age.

Not only that, but nukes are useful against concentrated populations - CITIES.

American cities are already destroyed by the left:
Let's suppose there is a nuclear exchange...
AMERICA:

These cities were once prosperous gems, but they are now toilets needing to be flushed. Russia would only be able to destroy America's cities with its nukes - blue cities all and mostly ghettos.

America's productive and 'red' population is dispersed widely and is not concentrated in cities.

Red state folks would be the survivors.

RUSSIA
All of Russia's valuable and productive assets ARE concentrated in its cities. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhney Novgorod, Voronezh... outside of the cities, in the oblasts live barefoot, TB infected, vodka soaked, toothless cretins.

They would be the survivors.

I may be overly cynical these days, but I really expect this to largely blow over, just like Georgia and the Olympic gay and Chechen problems.

Europe acts like a paper tiger, and Zero is a sympathizing p*ssy. The media and the public have insanely short attention spans to boot.

Actually their social issues are getting much better under Putin, which is one of reasons he’s so popular there.

Just to be very clear, you are supporting Putin, a former KGB agent, who thinks the single greatest disaster of modern history is the collapse of the communist USSR. A USSR that is not only responsible for the death and enslavement of millions of people, but that conservative hero's like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher expended enormous treasure and blood to destroy.

This is your hero, the guy your are supporting? Honestly, it is hard for me to comprehend what you're even doing on a conservative site with views like this.

I see comrade tcrlaf was finally banned, are you sure you wouldn't be happier posting on RT or perhaps communist Cuba's Granma?

A foreign dictator being right (outwardly) on a few issues, does not make them a good conservative. You are exactly correct.

Correct. This is the truth that Putin attempts to paper over with propaganda that people like BobL seem to believe.

LOL...

We still have some productive cities, like Houston.

It’s hard to tell, because their nukes, at least during the Cold War had some serious yield (much more than ours) and took out a lot more than just the cities they targeted at.

But I agree, assuming our nukes still work (we haven’t tested any in decades, and they are not stable, due to radioactive decay), we certainly can give them a black eye also.

I don’t see a lot of people here having problems with Putin a year ago, or others trying to silence them...

In any case, like I say, I’m done, I’ve made my points.
