The Malaysia Airlines crash is the end of Russia’s fairy tale
The Washington Post ^ | July 18, 2014 | Anne Applebaum

Posted on 07/25/2014 8:46:33 AM PDT by Uncle Chip

Before there is any further discussion of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, it’s important that one point be made absolutely clear:

This plane crash is a result of the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, an operation deliberately designed to create legal, political and military chaos.

Without this chaos, a surface-to-air missile would not have been fired at a passenger plane.

From the beginning, the Russian government did not send regular soldiers to Ukraine. Instead, it sent Russian mercenaries and security service operatives such as Igor Strelkov — the commander in chief in Donetsk and a Russian secret police colonel who fought in both Chechen wars ...

With the help of local thugs, these Russian security men besieged police stations, government offices and other symbols of political authority to delegitimize the Ukrainian state.

In this task, they were assisted by the Russian government and by Russia’s state-controlled mass media, both of which still constantly denigrate Ukraine ...

Into this ambiguous and unstable situation, the Russians cynically funneled a stream of heavy weapons: machine guns and artillery and, eventually, tanks, armed personnel carriers and anti-aircraft missiles....

Indeed, Strelkov on Thursday afternoon reportedly boasted online of having taken down another military plane before realizing that the plane in question was MH17. The blog post was removed.

In late June, several different Russian media sources published photographs of Buk anti-aircraft missiles that they said had been captured by the separatists — though they were probably outright gifts from Russia. These posts have also been removed.

This is the context within which a surface-to-air missile was aimed at a passenger plane: a lawless environment; irregular soldiers who might not be so good at reading radar; a nihilistic disregard for human life; scorn for international norms, rules or standards ....

Man, the Washington Post and New York Times sure have become a popular source for truthful news lately on FR.

Just as a blind squirrel will occasionally stumble upon an acorn it appears that the author of this piece somehow stumbled upon the truth.

Are you boss here now? I doubt it, he is busy tending the US border. Your crew has been posting insults for days to people who disagree with your hyperventilated opinion. Most just care more about the invasion of our own country right now. Many are also, for good reason, not about to trust Obama media. They are always dishonest.

To be honest, I don’t care what Obama does to Russia, as long as it doesn’t involve more troops or more arms that get into the wrong hands. If they sanctioned him with new financial sanctions today, I wouldn’t care.

Perhaps he could send about 500 gay activists into Russia. That should keep old Vlad busy for awhile.

You remind me of the Putinista who the other day was talking about how great Putin was on here. I think you folks need to have a “Pray for Putin” thread each day.

Human nature to pick a source that echos what ever point of view you may have. As for me, without a soveigner program, I still do not completely understand who the good or bad guys are in the Ukraine situation. I have yet to find that program sales kiosk.

Sorry, I am not into Putin. Not me who posts the “dreamy” /sarc pictures of him.

So, you failed to browbeat me and now we are wasting our time.

Rarely have I been lucky enough on FR to get insulted more than once a day. You changed that. Thanks.

Yeah, seeing "Crash" as if it was caused by a bird or flying elephant or something is pretty strange. Other than that, this is an example of a "beatings will continue until moral improves" opinion piece (in this case, until you submit and agree) claiming the motives and plans they ascribe to others are irrefutable facts when they're far from it.

Do, for example, they ascribe vicious, bloodthirsty, savage, Satanic, religious beliefs to those Mooze Lames who openly admit to them? No, that's not part of the party line. In this case, oh, they can't possibly be wrong, Anne writes a biweekly column for them. Would they every even by chance employ someone who can't divine the intentions and motives of others by laying her hands on their photo? Of course not.

I didn't see any new facts in it or even new or slightly modified spin. Let the beatings continue . . . etc.

I would be amazed to see the Washington Post say anything that differs in substance from the King Barry the 1st line. Maybe you can point out cases of their being off the reservation, though, I sure don't recall any.

Now, if they had limited themselves to saying, "a Civil War triggered by the Russian military takeover of Crimea" they'd be on the right track.

My own and all other opinions, though, were put into proper perspective for me back in boot camp. They're like particular orifice, everyone has one.

WaPo probably has reporters in Russia and Ukraine, so in this instance they can’t print too much ‘truth’, for the safety of their employees. But then, they never have a problem when it comes to lying, anyways.................

Washington Compost. Now there's a reliable source.

This plane crash is a result of the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine...

As one of the rebels said If Russia had invaded they would be in Kiev today. :)

They've been too busy looting the MH17 shootdown site and trying on the mascara.

....” one point be made absolutely clear”....

Well that lead in statement would give anyone a heads up the writer thinks he’s knows more than those investigating the case. Wrong way to begin except for those needing a feeding.

Besides.. the war in Ukraine was determined a shoe in by those who hijacked the Maidan in the first place. The war began then and all this is just more intensity of that...with added players in the theater....and no surprise to Eu or US....they just couldn’t manage it, nor can they now.

Crazy days. Makes me feel dirty like I am reading DU all of a sudden.
