GOP's Wehby Gaining in Oregon
newsmax.com ^ | 7/28/14 | George Will

"Are you kidding?" This is Monica Wehby's amiable response to people who wonder whether she will be able to bear the pressures of office if she wins her race as a Republican Senate candidate. For 17 of her 52 years she has been a pediatric neurosurgeon, holding in steady hands sharp steel and the fate of children's brains.

She probably can cope with the strains of legislative life.

Today, her task is to persuade Oregonians to act on the cogent exhortation of her campaign's bumper stickers: "Keep Your Doctor. Change Your Senator." She is trying to take a Senate seat away from freshman Democrat Jeff Merkley, who was elected in 2008 with 49 percent of the vote when Barack Obama carried the state with 57 percent.

This year, Merkley's task is to run far ahead of Obama's 43 percent job approval among Oregonians, with 54 percent of independents disapproving of the president.

Oregon is one of the 18 states and the District of Columbia that have supported Democratic nominees in at least six consecutive presidential elections. About half the state's voters live in the Portland metropolitan area, which has become emblematic of urban progressivism ("smart growth," autophobia).

But from 1969 to 1995, both Oregon senators were Republicans, and Wehby's pollster says Merkley's two-point lead (41-39) derives from the incumbent's perishable seven-point advantage in name recognition. Wehby is up one point among voters who say they "know" both candidates.

Wehby not only has two X chromosomes but supports abortion rights and the right of states to recognize same-sex marriages, which complicates the Democratic Party's continuing accusation that Republicans wage "war on women."

Wehby is moderate but I hope she wins. Victories in states like OR, CO, MN and MI can offset possible (and hopeful) losses in KY, SC and MS.

She grew up here in Nashville, TN. She’s a fine person, and would be an excellent addition to the Senate.

> “Keep Your Doctor. Change Your Senator.”

Great slogan.

But is she a gay-agenda and abortion supporter?

I certainly don’t agree with her on every position but she is a step up from what we currently receive from Oregon.

There are some talented, AMAZING women running this time around in many of our states.

Heartening!

She is, but on the loony, liberal left coast, those with firewall conservative ideologies go nowhere in statewide contests.

Exactly. She’s what we can hope for from Oregon. One would hope, though, that we could do better in states like South Carolina and Mississippi than what we currently have.

I don’t see her winning. I hope I’m wrong, but I never am.

She might but I'd take her over my supposed pro-life, demonRAT bastard, bobby casey here in PA.

If this she-trash is the best conservatives can put up it might as well be the end of the world. Any FReeper who votes for or supports this abortion and queer enabler should be caned and permanently banned.

She’s what we can hope for from Oregon.

So socially liberal, anti-family, anti-life candidates are all you can "hope for" and acceptable to you if they are for lower taxes. WTL are you doing on FR? Go to hell.

I supported Conger. It didn’t happen. I am not supporting anyone anymore. Besides, they don’t allow most people in Alabama to vote in Oregon.

It would, however, be better if Obama and the demos don’t control the senate for Obama’s last two years. Anyone that doesn’t understand that should be canned and permanently banned.

Why? Are you insane? Do you contribute to Planned barrenhood and belong to Log Cabin?

Before you hurl insults, perhaps you should look at the demographic realities and historical voting patterns in states like Oregon. Go ahead, nominate a pure conservative candidate in Oregon. When that candidate struggles to hit 30% of the vote, how does that help us?

Now, states like Mississippi, S. Carolina and Kentucky are a different story. Surely we can do better than Cochran, Graham and McConnell in those states.

I have no objection to conservative candidates, and I don’t particularly like RINOs, but sometimes reality is that a RINO is the best you can hope for in a given location. We are in a political war here. Wars are not won by going directly after the enemy’s stronghold. We must work up to that. We didn’t win WWII by sending an invasion force to the Japanese home islands on December 8, 1941, did we? We didn’t invade Berlin in January 1942. Sometimes you have to take what you can get to strengthen your own position and weaken that of the other side.

No need to act like a bully and a clown on the Internet.

I certainly don’t support abortion. My church certainly doesn’t.

If the demos have control of the senate Obama’s last two years, expect him to plug the courts with abortion loving liberals. If this is over your head, I cannot help you.

She is running the same campaign that has lost for the last 30 years. She is losing graciously rather than attempting to get Conservatives to vote for her.

Pray America wakes up
