Southwest Fresno leaders criticize hiring of white teacher for Gaston school's cultural studies

With just weeks before the new Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School opens in southwest Fresno, community and church leaders are calling on Fresno Unified School District to reconsider its hiring of a white teacher to instruct African-American, Latino and Southeast Asian studies there.

At an early morning news conference Monday, a small group of concerned citizens led by Rev. Karen Crozier met in front of the school on Church Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

People at the gathering said the new school, which is the first southwest Fresno middle school in decades, needs teachers who reflect the ethnic and racial background of its students.

Crozier and others were dismayed to learn the person hired to teach the school's three cultural studies classes is white. District officials initially considered hiring a teacher of color, she said, but ultimately hired Peter Beck, a former teacher at Hoover High School.

"We're just saying what the community wants. We didn't fight for a white male or female teacher to educate our babies," Crozier said. "We still are at these racial fault lines, and we want someone who will be able to think critically about those racial fault lines and how do we help heal, to restore the problems that have existed."

I’m just saying, “They’re being racist!” Color of skin doesn’t matter - it’s knowledge and ability that matter.

This refusal to attribute even the least degree of sensitivity to the prospective instructor of these very essential arts, is itself a form of intolerance. Although, chances are, that the prospective instructor is already well schooled in the nuances of “multiculturalism”, and would probably do more harm than good in the absolute sense, were he to assume the duties in the classroom.

The whole object of schooling is to prepare the young for the vicissitudes of life, and exercise the greatest exposure to the potential for success. Sorry to say, but this means, “thinking white”, and that may be anathema for the school board and the parents involved.

Did anyone in South Fresno criticize the fact that they even have a cultural studies lack of discipline?

I was trying to be tactful by avoiding the class subject.

Thankfully, I never had to endure that kind of torture when I attended university in the early 1970s. I did experience genuine rudeness, though, from a couple of gay men when they stopped me on a public sidewalk in Portland, OR, spit on me, and called me “breeder shit!”. That was 34-years ago.

I guess they’re afraid that the kids will be instructed properly with a non-person of color.

I don’t know anything about Peter Beck, but if he is as good a teacher on multiculturalism as they say he is, he’s probably a leftist whiner fully in favor of leftist racism... and probably in agreement with Crozier on every subject except who should teach this class. My apologies to Beck if I’m wrong.

These are patronage slots for blacks and Hispanics. No whites allowed. Why? Because its all about getting paid. By the taxpayers
Cui Bono. The students don’t benefit but the minority job hold does with a paycheck

Affirmative action is just the old school patronage system (jobs) updated

1- That’s racist.
2- Who authorized these 4 black people to represent the community? Are there no whites, hispanics or asians in the community? Was there a vote that said “no whites need apply”?
3- This is the kind of Carp that causes the racial fault lines these idiots are talking about. You dont stop racism by being racist.

“They’re being racist!” ..........

100% CORRECT! These so called minorities want everything their way, did they even consider the teacher hired might just be the best qualified for the job? Race has nothing to do with it.

He can’t be trusted to adequately inculcate the chilluns with the optimum level of “Hate Whitey”.

Actually, until someone tells me otherwise, my money is on Beck to do exactly that: inculcate the chilluns with hate-whitey. You don't think white liberals can inculcate hate-whitey? I'm betting Beck is a hate-whitey white liberal, until someone says otherwise.

What is the one very most important thing that is missing from this statement?
The word qualified. They do not seem interested in the teacher being QUALIFIED. They are more interest in the skin color or their race....

WOW can you be more racist then this?
Basically stated that a white person can not think critically about race and there for can not be qualified to teach on the subject..

And there are morons out there who believe we can actually coexist as a society with people like this!

America will break up along racial lines soon IMO. You can’t even try to meet these people in the middle.

They actually need three new teachers to teach these classes. Why would the Asian students be any happier with a black or Hispanic teacher than a white teacher. Come on folks need more sensitivity here.

Cui Bono!

BOL! Seasoned veteran FR Grasshopper, Dennis, has mastered Cui Bono in a very short time.

“These are patronage slots for blacks and Hispanics. No whites allowed. Why? Because its all about getting paid. By the taxpayers”

‘Cui Bono. The students don’t benefit but the minority job hold does with a paycheck.’

Then, throw in Union dues from so called minority teachers and the Teacher Union Thug bosses benefit.

Whites are now a minority in the state of California. One of these days, we will see lawsuits from the new minority, whites, in cases like this one.
