RICHMOND, Va. – U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor tells a Virginia newspaper he will resign his seat in the House of Representatives months earlier than expected.

Cantor tells the (Richmond Times-Dispatch) newspaper he has asked Gov. Terry McAuliffe to call a special election for his district that coincides with the Nov. 4 general election. That would enable his successor to take office immediately. …Wonder which RINO Cantor has in mind? or McAuliffe?
Good! I’d much rather have Brat’s voice in the caucus than Cantor’s RINO voice. Every additional Constitutional Conservative helps and each loss of a RINO helps.
He’s ready to cash in at his new lobbyist gig.
Follow the money. Cantor likely has a cushy revolving-door private sector job lined up that will fill up his coffers. He wants to get to that soonest.

He swore an oath. I guess when it’s no fun anymore, the oath goes out the window. He did not promise to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States until the day his sinecure was no longer assured.
So now his seat will go unfilled, or it will be filled by an appointment by the criminal Democrat Governor.

He’s already up in NYC trolling the powers that be for a job. Yep, a real Virginia citizen. Gonna go home and be a farmer, grocer, haberdasher, blah blah blah.....they’re all the same.
Originally, the Constitution provided that the new Congress and President take office in March. The 20th Amendment, ratified in 1933, moved the dates to January. We can move the dates yet again, and practically eliminate the lame duck period.

Agree. In most cases, the people K-Street gets from Congress retired on their own terms. In just about all other cases, they may have lost in the general election, typically during a sweep year.
But this is a NEW ONE, to be defeated by an unknown and unfunded opponent. But K-Street still has to reward him for being such a USEFUL IDIOT - otherwise they will have a much tougher time keeping ownership of the present Republican leadership. They will probably find him TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE, and likely despised, by most Republicans in Congress, but they have to give him the bucks anyway.
What I’m wondering more is why he’s leaving early. The district has been without representation for at least the past few years, once he turned on them (and the people in his office are a bunch of jerks, from what I hear). I figure one of two things - either he’s so radioactive that he was asked to leave by the RINOs - because every day people see him, they think about what a vote for AMNESTY could mean to their own careers (regardless of how much money Karl Rove is waving around) - or maybe to UNDERCUT the man who beat him, David Brat.
Not sure yet.
So in other words hold a special election for the seat so that the person elected can take office just in time to go on the Congressional Christmas break until the normal swearing in on January 3rd? Makes perfect sense to me. </sarcasm>
This vacancy would be for the Nov 5th - Jan 2 period. The nominees for the Jan 3 2015 - Jan 3 2017 term are already set.
The only thing I could find was this:
§ 24.2-209. Filling vacancies in House of Representatives.
When any vacancy occurs in the representation of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the House of Representatives, or when a representative-elect dies or resigns, the Governor shall issue a writ of election to fill the vacancy. Upon receipt of written notification by a representative or representative-elect of his resignation as of a stated date, the Governor may immediately issue a writ to call the election. The representative’s or representative-elect’s resignation shall not be revocable after the date stated by him for his resignation or after the forty-fifth day before the date set for the special election.
I’ll give you both a +1 for ‘sinecure’. Haiku for the use of the word, and Usagi, for drawing my attention back to it. I had to look up the definition though. Unfortunately, sinecure can be used to describe the perception far too many elected officials have of their positions once they become entrenched in the machinations of power and money.
Presuming the candidates for the special election are the same as the general election for the seat to begin on January 3, what this would do would be to give Cantor's replacement (Brat, most likely) an advantage in "seniority" over the incoming 2015 class because he would have joined Congress two months earlier.
If the special election candidates are different than the general election candidate, this makes no sense whatsoever unless it's just about Cantor cashing out early.
