The AP buried the lede in its report Saturday on President Barack Obamas drive to grant by executive order legal status and work permits to millions of illegal aliens in defiance of Congress.
At the very end of the 22 paragraph article, entitled Experts: Obama Can Do a Lot to Change Immigration, is mention that President George W. Bush considered doing what Obama is pushing for now after being similarly stymied by Congress on amnesty but his advisors concluded the presidency did not have the constitutional authority to act in such manner:
"After a broad immigration bill failed in 2007, President George W. Bush ordered his staff to come up with every possible change he could make without the approval of Congress.
Gregory Jacob, who worked on immigration issues with the presidents Domestic Policy Council, said the list included similarly broad protections from deportation as those implemented by Obama. But Bushs staff concluded that the president didnt have the legal authority to grant such sweeping and categorical protections, Jacob said.
Bushs director for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Julie Myers Wood, said much of the discussion at the time focused on small changes to visa programs or other efforts that would impact relatively small groups of immigrants. One concern, she said, was the potential for unintended consequences of encouraging more illegal immigration.
Republicans have complained that Obama has done what the Bush administration feared. Many have blamed the president for the influx of more than 57,000 unaccompanied immigrant children, mostly from Central America, who have been arrested at the Mexican border since Oct. 1.
With President Obama set to provoke a Constitutional crisis soon with his amnesty executive orderincluding provoking possible impeachmentit is incumbent on President Bush to speak out now against Obamas actions. The issue is protecting our Constitution. If Bush believed he didnt have authority to do this then he needs to speak out now to prevent Obama from doing grave harm to our Nation and Constitutional order.
I say let's propose a serious litmus test. I say the border fence can be just that litmus test issue. Lying Rats and RINOs can obfuscate amnesty a dozen ways, but a fence is real and visible. Put every congress critter and presidential nominee on record: Will you get the damn fence built, or not? If the answer is no, RUN HIM OUT OF OFFICE. Enough of lying liars: BUILD THE FENCE, or STFU and GET OUT OF THE WAY.
"Free Republic is here to continue fighting for independence and freedom and against the unconstitutional encroachment of ever expanding socialist government...
We believe in the founding principles with all our hearts and mean to defend them to our dying breath..."
~Jim Robinson
My point being much greater than the fence itself. The GOP presidential nominee who swears to go “moon landing” on the border, will also be believable when he swears no amnesty, etc.
Any pol who refuses to build the fence, will also lie about amnesty, etc.
Dubya is just another New World Order ‘bot, plain and simple.
Well said, livius.
:’) Apparently there is according to the latest version of Rand Paul’s public persona.
If this is true, then it would appear that Bush too was a traitor. What is there some kind of couture of leftist treason in Washington that leads every man we might try to send to only try to replace us, rather than enforce the law?
I knew GWB had a soft spot for illegal Hispanic immigration, but I didn’t know he sank so far as to consider the Obama solution.
Sadly, Bush’s policies had more in common with Big Govt liberals than with Constitutional Conservatives.
Even after 9-11, he refused to build the wall to stop the illegal alien invasion...and we are seeing the damaging results that could overthrow America and replace it with socialism/communism FOREVER!
The photo of him marching in mexican May Day parade waving a mexican flag speaks volumes about the traitor!
