Chinese authorities executed on Friday a Japanese man who had been sentenced to death in connection with stimulant drug smuggling, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said.
The identity of the man is not immediately known.
Kishida told a news conference that while it is up to China to decide what kind of penalty should be imposed on criminals, "We have conveyed to the Chinese side that we have taken a heightened interest in the death penalty handed down to Japanese nationals."
China informed Japan of the execution in the morning, Kishida said. A court in Dalian in northeastern China conveyed the information to the Japanese consular office in the city, according to the Foreign Ministry.
In China, the smuggling of 50 grams or more of amphetamines is an offense punishable by death. In 2010, four Japanese were executed in China for stimulant drug smuggling.
Sends a loud and clear message about making sure one bribes the right people.
Context would be assisted if the report also mentioned how many Chinese people were executed for the same offense. But, perhaps that is not the intention of the author(s) (or the approving government agency).

Singapore has similarly draconian measures, but one gets the impression that Singapore also has a lot more integrity about it.

Singapore would execute anyone for that exact crime. Most SE Asian nations has zero-tolerance policies toward drugs and it is well-known to travellers. Stupid games, stupid prizes.
The degrees of integrity differ however.
I look forward to our trip to China and Asia this fall.. with stitched lips and stifled tongie.

That's true.I remember almost needing a change of underwear the first time I traveled to Singapore and saw in the Immigration hall a sign in several languages saying "death penalty for drug smugglers".And all I had with me was my blood pressure meds and my baby aspirin!
I'd have far,far more trust in the court proceedings in Singapore than those in China.

If you do something egregiously wrong, yes. But they wouldn’t have much interest in framing some random guest. Not if they don’t want to torpedo their hospitality industry.
Are you suggesting the Japanese guy was framed? If so, I don't know why, but in any case, yes, I agree, that is something not worth worrying about.
I very much disagree about the possibility of giving a tourist a break to protect the tourist industry though. Living in Thailand, which is as dependent on tourism as any much as any country is, I can tell you it doesn't work that way here, except that foreigners sentenced to very long terms generally have those sentences commuted after several years.
Generally it's the same in other SE Asia tourist destinations like: Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines.
I thought this was about worries that the oriental gendarmes might want to plant something on you.
I wish we had the same rules towards illegal drugs.
About the only place besides Texas where you can get executed by the government is to get addled and ram your car against the barriers at the White House or other Federal government building. Or, kill a Federal employee. Other than that, anything goes.
