Army announces new camouflage uniform pattern (again!)

The Army has selected a new camouflage pattern to begin fielding next year, an unidentified senior Army spokesperson announced in a statement late Thursday.

“The Army has confirmed through testing that the pattern would offer exceptional concealment, which directly enhances force protection and survivability for Soldiers,” according to the statement from the Army.

The pattern will be used in all combatant commands, including Afghanistan, the Army said. Uniforms and equipment with the existing pattern won’t be discarded, but replaced only as they wear out.

The pattern was developed by the Army under the name Scorpion W2 to replace the much-maligned Universal Camouflage Pattern, a pixelated combination of green, gray and tan that some soldiers said provided bad concealment in most places.

If someone knows the EXACT pattern that is being used, can’t a computer processing filter be applied to scan for the pattern like a finger print?

They need a uniform made of e-paper-like fabric that can be changed to random patterns!

Yep. The good old BDU (Battle Dress Uniform). We doggies had a fancy (read: idiotic) way of rolling our sleeves up. You Marines rolled yours up in a "let's dispense with that fancy BS and just roll the damn things up" manner. I always admired the common sense of that.

In Central America and Grenada, they let us wear jungle fatigues. I LOVED the jungle fatigues. I could hide a Volkswagen in those cargo pockets.

Every woman I know is a sucker for Navy whites with no back pockets on a trim guy.

While that's a good thing for dealing with one side of the "All is fair in love and war" coin, it's not very good for the other.

I take after my mother, she married a Navy guy, my dad, and we always thought he looked so handsome in his chief’s uniform for inspection.

My husband and I watched a great WWII Gary Cooper movie, Task Force, with fellow TPer’s on 4/4/ 14 at a theater and I think part of winning the war was we were dressed seriously and comported ourselves with discipline and high standards and that was outwardly shown by the uniforms of the day.

Have a great Sunday.

We wore the olive drap drab in Vietnam 67 68

Ah, yes. I remember that uniform well. Worked for me except sometimes the buttons seemed too thick! (I know what the earlier poster meant!)

“Third uniform change for the Army in less than a decade...but, hey, DoD uniform contractors gotta eat too.”

Yes, but us taxpayers get the bill for this make-work nonsense.

“Velcro and zippers have no place on battle uniforms.”

You’re right; I’ve always had fatigues (originally my father’s, then siblings’ that they “handed down” - I would remove any patches and such), and found them very practical for manhunt as a kid and camping as an adult. A lot of the digital stuff has shown up in flea markets lately, but I have no interest in it because of the Velcro - it wears out in ways buttons never do, and is messy when everything else is stuck on it.

The creepiest thing was a pair of digital camo maternity pants at a flea market; one of my sons was completely puzzled by that. This is what the army had been reduced to...

I agree on the Velcro, but zippers have their utility. Both the British Denison smock and the US M42 had heavier brass zippers that take a little patina with age making them very subdued in appearance, and when constructed properly, are relatively silent.

Exactly what I was thinking, looks a lot like the BDU’s.

I always thought that the Navy should have a uniform that reacts with salt water. If a sailor fell overboard the salt water would cause a color change in the uniform making the sailor more visible. Can this be done?

Velcro is so damn noisy. Zippers are ok until they break.
Buttons: low tech. Ask the Amish. they always work

Well one things for certain, they won’t need many of these new uniforms since they have and will downsize the military more and more.

Words cannot describe how I despise odumbo and his ilk.

To try and make a one style fits all terrain is folly. Even Realtree ha several version. Interesting thing; the Army troops around here wear an digital pattern that is designed for this terrain. At 50 feet it is almost impossible to see in sage brush. Woody areas not so good. I wear it when I am coyote hunting.

Yes, but us taxpayers get the bill for this make-work nonsense.

You need to get with the program and be a patriot. Besides, think of the masses of poor, underpaid overseas factory workers who make those uniforms just to survive. Don't be a monster.
