The march of transgender rights: Is this the next civil rights frontier?
Globe and Mail ^ | 08/03/2014 | MARGARET WENTE

As a child, Lindsay Leigh Bentley desperately wanted to be a boy. She refused to wear dresses and adored going hunting with her dad. She loved sticks, guns, motorcycles and monsters. She chopped the hair off her Barbies. Her parents had to cut her own hair short because she refused to let them brush it. Her best friends were boys. In childhood pictures, she looks fierce, and tough as nails.

These days, her worried parents would probably hustle her off to the nearest gender-identity clinic. But Lindsay grew up in a more backward age, when such things did not exist. So she had to struggle on as best she could. Her parents let her be herself. Today she is a (strikingly feminine) wife and mother who still loves hunting and football. “Had my parents decided, at age 5, that I was a boy, I can not imagine the confusion that I would have experienced during my teen years,” she writes on her blog.

Ms. Bentley decided to tell her story after Ryland Whittington, age 6, became a child celebrity this spring. Ryland, too, was desperate to be a boy. After consulting a therapist, Ryland’s parents cut her hair, began to call her “he,” and informed their friends and family that their daughter was now their son. They made a video showing Ryland’s transformation into a little man in a suit. It went viral.

“There are huge benefits of doing this earlier in life,” gender therapist Darlene Tando told ABC News, which publicized Ryland’s story on Good Morning America. “It’s really just like they have been given this gift that everyone around them starts seeing them for who they are.”

The Whittingtons were widely applauded for their total acceptance of their transgender son.

A transgender is not the same thing as a transvestite.

FWIW: Ed Wood was a heterosexual, and so are most transvestites.

That was GOOD.

On a less serious but definitely related note — did you ever see the South Park episode where Randy (Stan’s dad) has “dolphinoplasty” to change him into a porpoise? It was masterful fun-poking at all this perverse gender-changing nonsense.

Yes I know but the point is the transgender considers themselself in need of a sex change. He goes on to discuss this in the film and the operation.

This is what he termed as ‘nature’s mistake’ and should be accepted by society as so.

He also compares that ‘normal’ behavior to the ‘normal’ behavior of dressing up as a woman as a transvestite does. They both s/b considered normal, according to the film.

Yet the film shows he is in need of therapy which eventually his wife provides with her understanding.

Turn the TV off. And leave it off. In fact, get rid of it. Cancel the newspapers. Children should not be exposed to this cultural depravity.

A man who mutilates himself to look like a woman, still isn't female.

Bingo....he'll still have that damn Y chromosone.

Usually being a trannie is the manifestation of serious mental illness, at least judging by all the ones wandering around the streets.

I saw “Glen or Glenda?” almost 40 years ago, and don’t remember much. I don’t think Ed Wood has been a very influential voice in the political realm, anyway.

Idiot psychiatrists, the phrase is Tom Boy and it’s normal. The little boys who are not into boy things is also normal (not that they aren’t in for some difficulties). In the teen years, Tom boys are generally liked by boys but not by other girls. Effeminate boys are often liked by girls. Teen girls look at Justin Bieber and don’t feel threatened like they do with a rough kid. Boys can relax around Tom boys. It’s all part of human nature. Butt out.

Just another example of how amazingly stupid and hypocritical liberals are. They want to ban therapy and treatment for people who have same-sex attractions and don’t want them supposedly because they should be “forced to accept who they are”, yet don’t believe people who are fully genetically, hormonally, and anatomically a male or female necessarily are that gender and may actually be the other gender trapped in another’s body. Unbelievably stupid. Kids go through rebellious phases...nurturing that into a permanent reality makes those who do that to their children unfit parents.

No, it encourages them NOT to be who they are and NOT to let everyone around see them for who they are. What utter nonsense. This "therapist" needs mental health therapy herself.

No, not at all. But the points he made were likely opinions of the time.

Btw, I’m pretty open minded. Regarding how they say Glen or Glenda was awful, well, I found it pretty expressionistic of him in a time when no one would dare come out with those thoughts.

I think it was rather a real work of art from that perspective. He used that film to actually ‘paint’ from his soul, expressing himself.

I know one could or would disagree with him, the subject very at odds with a ‘50s audience. He was really an original artist in film in that movie.

I was surprised at how strongly he presented his case. I felt his film was honest, and not deserving of the remarks made about it.

Margaret, learn something about a topic before you start writing. You're confusing "sex" and "gender" throughout the article. I realize that people use the terms interchangeably but sex and gender are not the same thing (and neither necessarily corresponds with sexual orientation). Sex is biological (i.e., what "plumbing" someone is born with) whereas gender is a cultural thing. Sexual orientation is an entirely different matter again.

This is a comment on her article at the link. Can you believe this total stupidity? How can someone be this stupid to not only think, but take the time to write something this moronic?
