Ukraine Claims a Victory and a Setback Against Pro-Russia Rebels

Military Says It Took Back a Town Even as Some Troops Crossed Border With Russia

KIEV—Ukrainian forces were seeing mixed results in their battle against pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country on Monday, reporting they had moved closer to cutting off the separatist stronghold of Donetsk even as several hundred Ukrainian troops surrendered overnight across the Russian border.

Military spokesman Col. Andriy Lysenko told reporters in Kiev that Ukrainian forces had retaken Yasinuvata, a small city on the northern outskirts of Donetsk, closing off what he said was an important supply route for the separatists. A Twitter feed used by the separatists later denied the city had fallen, without elaborating.

While Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council released a battlefield map Monday showing Donetsk cut off from the rest of the separatist-held territory and the Russian border, Col. Lysenko told reporters that the city hadn't yet been completely isolated.

The government is calling on residents of rebel-held territory to leave their homes as the fighting intensifies and is providing humanitarian corridors for residents of Donetsk, Luhansk and Horlivka to flee safely to Ukrainian-held territory. City officials in Luhansk reported Monday that electricity, water and phone service had been cut off by fighting. Services in Donetsk remain operational, officials said, though shelling could be heard outside the city through the night.

Kiev's forces have made steady gains in recent days against separatist forces in the areas around Luhansk and Donetsk, but have sought to avoid a direct confrontation in those rebel stronghold cities. Defense Minister Valeriy Heletei, in an interview with the BBC's Ukrainian service aired Monday, said he was confident Kiev's forces would prevail but that retaking them would be difficult.

“Putin worshiper core”

Lol.. ANOTHER Strawman? Really???
It’s much easier to demonize when you first try to pigeon-hole, eh?

I get it. Anyone that doesn’t buy whatever Kiev’s “Today’s Current Truth” happens to be, no matter how different it is from yesterday’s Current Truth, is a “Putinista”.

It’s is not a matter of buying into Kiev’s version of events that makes one a Putinista. It’s buying into Moscow’s version of events. Glad to explain the difference.

BREAKING:

Novorosinform, the DNR’s equivalent of Kiev’s Ukrinform, is claiming that 702 Ukrainian troops have surrendered to the Rebels in the town of Shakhtyorsk, within the last few hours.

Tweets are saying this is the remainder of the 72nd Air Mobile.

If true, this would be the other surrender talked about earlier today, and a HUGE loss for Kiev. They did not surrender to Russia, but to the Rebels.

Your hero, wannabe Stalin Igor Girkin, has already said it is a lie. He also said D.O.L.G does not even exist. I don't even know what value you see in constantly posting the fantasies and propaganda meant to demoralize Ukrainian fighting men here.

You claim to be presenting the other side, but the bits you get exited about and post are along the lines of "Bart Simpson is making love to your wife".

Girkin's statement

I find it interesting that all you people can do is name-call and use strawmen.

I understand you are madly biased, and things are running against you, but really?

Time will only tell.

Some unsettling developments:
- few reports of Russian suicide bombers.
- while above remains unconfirmed, this one is more certain - there are underage soldiers among the Russians. Like these 15-17 year old kids

"there are underage soldiers among the Russians. Like these 15-17 year old kids" -------- Right Sector has been recruiting kids to fight for their militias for weeks. Funny how you never mentioned this then. Selective outrage, perhaps? This pic is from a departure blessing ceremony in Dnipropetrovsk for a "Special Police Battalion", attended by Filatov, posted on Twitter on July 12th. Who knows if these kids are still alive.

Who knows if these kids are still alive.

If they got sent into 'the cauldron' and haven't got the sense to surrender, its doubtful.

I’ll go ahead and play stupid answering this, much like you guys do denying that Russia is driving the conflict in the East and that Russians shot down MH17, with the classic “there’s not enough evidence”. Can’t accurately determine how old someone wearing a balaclava is by looking at a picture. The short ones, those could be women or midgets :), or they’re not a part of this battalion, but soldier’s children joining for the picture.

“shot down MH17, with the classic “there’s not enough evidence”.”

Please link to whenever I have said that. You can’t, of course. You are just attempting to paint with a broad brush to delegitimize other statements.

Like I have said, it seems some people can’t argue a point, but instead attempt to put words in another person’s mouth. That’s pretty childish, IMO.

I have been very clear about what I think happened to MH17.

By golly, they could be MARTIAN SPECIAL FORCES, as well!
