BERLIN—German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday called on Moscow to respond to reports that tanks and troops had crossed from Russia into eastern Ukraine in support of separatist rebels there.
Ms. Merkel discussed the reports and their confirmation by separatist leaders in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Saturday, Steffen Seibert, Ms. Merkel's spokesman said in a statement.
The comments came as the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia were set to meet in Berlin on Sunday in a renewed attempt by Berlin to engineer a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
"The Chancellor said she expected the Russian government to comment on these reports and the statements of the separatists," Mr. Seibert said.

Putin is a mass murderer, thief and bully, like Stalin whom he admires. I don't know of any Freepers who admire Stalin or Hitler even if they seem bloody, bold and resolute. By the way, Putin is pretty short. I've always noticed that all these "strong" dictators are always short or effeminate in some way.
This is one of the reasons why our movement is so easily manipulated. Human beings value the appearance over substance. Case in point, I remember when seemingly rational conservatives started pimping for Romney when, a week or two weeks before, they hated his guts, and after his loss, they returned to hating him again, as if nothing happened.
In Russia, youngish conscripts are routinely raped by their superior officers as part of their hazing, sometimes literally pimped out as prostitutes (they blackmail them with photographs of the rape, things like that), and all of this is protected by the regime.
Russia is a country where Communist agents and self-proclaimed National Bolsheviks masquerade as "Orthodox Nationalists" and use Christianity to damn capitalism and democracy.
If you spent 5 seconds thinking clearly and examining what reality is, you would not get so easily fooled by the mere appearance of a thing.

Don't forget the Israeli shoot down of the Libyan airliner killing 108 innocents in 1973 or the Soviet shoot down of of the KAL 747 in assassinating Congressman Larry McDonald.
A likely shootdown of a Russian passenger plane by the Ukrainians occurred in 2001 - you don't see the Sorosites talking about that one. And then there is the alleged French shootdown of an Italian airliner in 1980 - but one needs a good tinfoil hat for that last one.

My comment was based on leaders who us admired by their own people. Putin has high approval in Russia. Germans were proud of Hitler. Stalin was looked up to by Russians.
You are correct in that a strong leader is not necessarily a good leader.
However some Freepers might admire Putin simply because he is making Obama look weak, which he certainly is. Obama is all about politics. And he rather be playing golf than play leader.
I think that we don’t need a foreign despot to show us Obama is weak. Part of the reason I didn’t want Obama as president is because I knew he was weak and naïve. Now, it’s odd to me that some people take delight in being proved right, if they agreed with me, unless they actually want a weak president or they want US interests harmed for a long time. I realize for some of the people on FReeRepublic what they want is Russia to reestablish its hegemony. They want a Russian Empire. They believe Russian can even eliminate male homosexuality. Even though, as was stated above, rape in the Soviet/Russian/Putin army is a commonplace, these folks think Putin is unaware of it and keen to stop fags. On another note, abortion is very common in Russia. But Mr. Phony Conservative Putin, who could eliminate it with a ukase chooses to do nothing about it. Likewise I don’t believe he’s very concerned, really, about queers.

I agree we already know Obummer is a weakling on many issues. Putin is exposing his weakness for the whole world to see and playing him like a fiddle. If I was a Russian, I would be happy and proud to see Putin acquired Crimea for almost free. If Putin steals Ukraine, he will be a huge hero in Russia.
