US rethinks giving excess military gear to police

After a decade of sending military equipment to civilian police departments across the country, federal officials are reconsidering the idea in light of the violence in Ferguson, Missouri.

The public has absorbed images of heavily armed police, snipers trained on protesters and tear gas plumes. Against that backdrop, Attorney General Eric Holder said that when police and citizens need to restore calm, "I am deeply concerned that the deployment of military equipment and vehicles sends a conflicting message."

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said police responses like that in Ferguson have "become the problem instead of the solution." Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said he will introduce legislation to curb the trend of police militarization.

But then where will the excess military gear go to? Why, the Brownshirts, of course!

We aren’t going to be able to stop the proliferation of the military weapons to local police forces.

It’s important, however, to change those things we can, and in this case one thing to change is our perception of those weapons.

We need to begin thinking of them as resources for our side, resources being maintained and fueled for us to use when they are needed.

It’s about time.

Now they just need to work on the attitudes in law enforcement that are the root problem.

B.S. Pure posturing...The train has left the station...

The ruling class needs well-armed Gestapo-like government organizations to maintain its tyrannical grip on the serfs...

There isn't a single politician, already elected or soon-to-be elected, who cares about restoring the freedoms of the former Constitutional Republic.

There is only one solution (besides Apophis).

Mark Steyn makes a good point. Ferguson can afford riot gear, etc., but not dash cams?

No. More! More efficient weapons, gear and geardos in every jurisdiction. Raise taxes, fees and fines to make it happen! Then move them all to jurisdictions away from their homes to make it more interesting. For example, swap the Detroit police with those in Orange County, CA. Give them immunity against litigation by anyone at any price, and watch the picture show! [For the extra fun pack, issue flamethrowers to ‘em!]

The violence of the protesters or the violence of the police?
