Syria warns against U.S. strikes on Islamic State on its soil

BEIRUT — Syria warned the Obama administration Monday not to extend its air war against the Islamic State into Syria, as the militants celebrated another key victory over government forces in the north of the country.

The warning came a day after the group overran a major air base in north-central Syria, putting the Islamic State in full control of Raqqah province, where American photojournalist James Foley was held for much of his captivity and where his beheading last week is thought to have occurred.

Raqqah also was the site of a failed rescue attempt this summer in which Delta Force commandos sought to snatch Foley and a group of other Americans held by the Islamic State from a prison east of Raqqah, said U.S. officials and witnesses in the area.

The capture of Tabqa airfield Sunday was the latest in a string of recent military successes for the extremist fighters, who have been consolidating their hold across northern Syria even as U.S. airstrikes launched earlier this month temper the group’s expansion in northern Iraq.

U.S. officials have not ruled out pressing the airstrikes into Syria, telling reporters last week that the United States would not be restricted by “geographic boundaries” when confronting the militants.

Why wouldn't Obama work with Syria to disintegrate the monster that US policy created?

There was actually some crazytalk from TV news analysts that the gov might still be thinking about arming "friendly rebels" opposed to ISIS and Assad. At this point, there are only two sides that make sense... ISIS vs everyone else.

The Obama regime would not limit action in Syria to strikes against ISIS.

They would quickly expand the effort into a remove Assad campaign.

This will result in a confrontation with Russia.

Any direct military clash with Russia will escalate to frightening levels very quickly.

Lets not forget that Russia has the worlds largest and most modern nuclear weapons arsenal. Our arsenal has been allowed to both dwindle in size and become a bit outdated.

Curiously, yesterday there was a statement from the Syrians asking for airstrikes. Some confusion in the Syrian government I think.

Our fearless leader doesn’t want any of his true buddies mad at him, so he will take this warning seriously. Too bad if “IS” expands and kills more people. What really matters to 0 is keeping his bosom buddies happy.

That airbase should, of course, be obliterated by American air power, regardless of Assad’s protest.
