Canada’s public health agency is preparing to bring home a trio of scientists who were helping to combat Ebola in Sierra Leone after three people in their hotel complex tested positive for the viral hemorrhagic fever.

A Health Canada spokesman confirmed late Tuesday night that the Public Health Agency of Canada is finalizing plans to pull its mobile laboratory team out of the West African country.

Good idea. And don’t let anyone travel to or from the affected places.

So this outbreak goes to the next level of seriousness: Pulling out the physicians because it is too dangerous for them.

If this is the case, the next logical step would be to enforce a full quarantine and let the outbreak burn itself out. One of them closed public schools until October. But I don’t think these African countries have the means to enact an effective quarantine.

They keep reassuring us that this disease is hard to catch, but doctors using all the necessary safety gear that would prevent them from getting the most virulent viral infection known to man are somehow mysteriously coming down with this virus.

Someone is lying to us. The question is.... Why?

They say that Ebola is only spread by bodily fluids. Those bodily fluids sure do seem to get around!

Why on earth would you plan a trip to East Africa?

Even if there wasn’t an Ebola epidemic, what is there that would compel you to go there?

I'm sure working all day with infected people takes away some of the mystery. They are not causal, short-duration interactions.

Cheap fare...opportunity for a stopover in Dubai...the Serengeti.I went there about 35 years ago and *loved* it.One last trip there is on my bucket list for I'm likely to be meeting my Creator sooner rather than later.

Kilimanjaro

Although Kilimanjaro wasn't on the long list of "don'ts" I was given by the surgeon who replaced my hip I suspect that he'd disapprove of me attempting a climb.I suspect my cardiologist would disapprove as well! ;-)

East Africa: EA Plans Intensive Airport Screening to Check Ebola

“TANZANIA and fellow East African Community (EAC) partner states have resolved to concentrate on Ebola virus prevention through intensive screening at the region’s airports.

An emergency meeting held to address the outbreak of the pandemic in the region has directed all airlines to carry special surveillance forms onboard for all arriving passengers to fill in; to ensure that the EAC Secretariat and Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (CASSOA) develop a monitoring and evaluation tool to follow-up on the implementation.

The EAC Secretariat here has released the recommendations of the EAC-CASSOA convened meeting to address the Ebola scourge in the region. Bearing in mind that some operators based or transiting through the East African Community Partner States operate direct flights into the affected West African region, CASSOA held the emergency meeting of the five EAC partner states’ National Civil Aviation Authorities and National Airport Authorities to discuss the issues related to the matter under the auspices of the Centre for Aviation Medicine.

The emerging Ebola threat in West Africa has become a global concern with serious consequences. Experts believe that possible transportation of infected persons by air transport is a reality....”

Muslims were not killing every Christian they can find 35 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

The only way I would ever go to East Africa today is if I am on a plane to Hawaii and it got hijacked to Africa.

If you really want to see the Serengeti, I'd keep an eye on the National Geographic channel. Airfare is free and the beer in your refrigerator is cold.

Either someone is lying, or it’s a previously unknown strain for which the precautions are ineffective. There’s no way of knowing for sure so quarantine is the only realistic option until they can figure out how to deal with it.
