A few comments on buying NFA items

A couple of weekends ago I was at the range testing out my new Surefire 762 suppressor. I ended up doing more chatting than shooting as I answered a great deal of questions about obtaining NFA items (Silencers, Machine Guns, Destructive Devices, Short Barreled Rifles, Short Barreled Shotguns, Any Other Weapons(AOW), etc)

Suppressors are a gun safety item you’d think the left would mandate. Instead, they want guns to be damaging to hearing by making it difficult and invasive to get them. “They criminalize suppressors and then try to ban shooting ranges because guns are too loud.” - John Ross, Unintended Consequences.

Suppressors ought to cost about $50 but because of all the hassle and paperwork involved they cost $400 plus $200 tax.

In some countries, suppressors are required on hunting rifles. Not here.

WHAT? I can’t hear you, speak up.

Not to mention it would cause havoc with their “shot trackers/locators” mounted/located in some cities. Then chit-cago would really have a problem. Do they even have “shot trackers/locators” there. Sub sonic ammo to prevent the “crack” popping the sound barrier needed as well. Can’t do much about the noise of the cycling mechanism.

WHAT? Possibly due to shooting and playing guitar with the amps on 11 or 12 for a lot of years, I’m constantly wondering who’s calling me now. When I try to answer the ringing, there’s nobody there, :>}

Suppressors are just another instance of people ‘knowing’ what they know about guns from what they see in movies. The 100yd shots with a snubnose to shoot the bad guy’s gun out of his hand. The blast from a .45 that knocks the bad guy flying back 10 feet and out a 20 storey window. The shots through the shoulder girdle that never hit anything structural. The revolver with a 30 round cylinder. The shotgun that requires an infinite number of racks and yet never seems to eject. The hammer that never seems to stay cocked. And the silencer that makes a Barrett .50 just go ‘pfft’.

I have a game that I inflict on my family: who can find the most things wrong in this Hollywood gun scene? It gets tedious and they react with “aw, not again” but they are really good at spotting the errors in handling and physics. Would that our ‘betters’ were 1/10th as good.

My suppressor (still at the Class 3 shop I purchased from) is $700.

I applied last Oct and am still awaiting for his call that I can pick it up.

Physics sucks huh? Hmmm. If the .45 hits that hard, then the shooter should suffer from the recoil as well as the target.

I paid for my suppressor in June and I was told there was a 6 month wait for the ATF to complete the check\paperwork. My FFL has it in his safe. Can’t wait to pick it up in December. I paid $550 + $200 for the tax stamp. A little pricey but way cool. I’m looking forward to shooting with it.

Yep, the ATF deliberately sits on the applications for long periods of time to dissuade more people from applying.

Can’t do much about the noise of the cycling mechanism.

Well, you can put in plastic parts or rubber sound-deadening bumpers. Soon to be made a felony, based on where things are going.

People not doing their jobs should be fired and stripped of pension. Even medical insurance companies are expected to reply within a couple of weeks, and to say they have some paperwork to go through before they get back to you is something of an understatement.

Yep, my future suppressor is in his vault as well. I can’t see how these class 3 arms dealers can make it with all of their money tied up in merchandize that is unsaleable for up to one year?

My buddy talked me into acquiring one after I shot his with a .308 set up.

It is sweet...

But it IS their job to slow walk the paperwork.

Were you using standard loads when you shot it? Compared to a Rifle without, just how much would you say it suppressed the report?

“I applied last Oct and am still awaiting for his call that I can pick it up.”

That’s odd since so many applied just a few months ago and have had theirs returned already. I think your paperwork got lost. I would feel free to call the BATFE and find out what happened.

Standard loads. Quite a bit of difference!! I would say that the noise is reduced @ 60% give or take.

No hearing protection necessary.

FYI, if you ever get a chance to shoot a SBR with a suppressor with 300 Blackouts, do it. Dang,,, almoooossst close to quiet. That is my next desired setup.
