In some ways this is good but I have reservations about our every waking moment being recorded and cataloged.

The demand for cameras on police officers nationwide is going to backfire on the Gibs-Me-Dats...

If Officer Darren Wilson had been wearing one the camera images of his encounter with Gentle Giant Brown would show the media fantasy tales to be as solid as Unicorn farts.

so what happens when the cop wants the bathroom?
Does he turn it off and then he turns it back on later but the suspect is now claiming he was done and his lawyer will claim that is when the cop turned the camera off.

My friend got pulled over this weekend in PA, up on Rt. 80. When officer came up to her window the first thing he said was, this is a camera, it is pointed at you and it is recording everything you say and do. Then he asked the usual, do you know why I stopped you this morning, can I have your license, reg. and insurance... it didn’t matter to us either way, camera or not, but as we drove away (after receiving a summons for not moving over to the left while they had someone pulled over) all we could talk about was the camera. Our thoughts were hopeful, that they would reduce problems all around — and that maybe we’ve seen our last he said/she said type thing. And maybe our last riot! Hardly... but we were hopeful just the same!

The camera does lie. However, the more cameras in play, the more likely you're going to be able to reconstruct an historical account. The police camera will provide a different viewpoint (literally) from bystanders' cell phone cameras. Two or more police cameras (some combination of body cameras and dashboard cameras) should suffice for most instances.

I have pointed out to our city and county officials that the cost of body and car cameras is one heck of a lot lower than the cost of dealing with civil unrest the next time a cop shoots an unarmed mentally ill person or another kid with a BB gun. Footage might not stop a protest or two, but if it is released it *might* have a positive effect in either convincing people who will no longer take the word of the police or allowing the officer to be immediately, publicly and harshly disciplined.

I mean we all get that it is unfair to the police to be front line mental health workers, but they simply can’t keep shooting people who are delirious and armed with maybe a screwdriver or knife, or kid with an airsoft; a cop without the social skills to deal with that situation is as unequipped for the job as one that cannot drive or shoot. The next time it happens there had better be a complete, coherent and satisfactory (to the community as a whole) response or there will be a riot.

No, the people that have to view each camera’s footage gets to see a urinal or toilet door up close.

I saw or read a news story early on after the shooting that
Ferguson had dash and perhaps body cameras as well that they had ordered, but they had not been installed/handed out at the time of the incident. Can’t vouch for the accuracy of the story, but I don’t recall hearing or reading that again. Seems that Officer Wilson would be justifiably livid if those items had been collecting dust in some storage area.

theses sdpd cameras have to be turned on by pressing a button, apparently they don’t have enough battery or memory for a full shift, then sdpd hides the videos from the public

I wouldn’t say a word to the cop if he was pointing a camera at my face.

Funny how they can shove a camera in your face for a minor traffic infraction, but if you try to video tape THEM, they threaten you with arrest.

Yep. The cameras work both ways, like for the drunk Austin prosecutor.
