Doctors: 'Irresponsible' to send troops to 'combat' Ebola

A real-life horror story is playing out in Africa as Ebola spreads, and President Obama’s decision to send 3,000 troops to Liberia to combat the virus could very well put Americans at risk of contracting the deadly illness at home, some health experts say.

According to the World Health Organization, at least 4,985 people have contracted Ebola and at least 2,461 have died. Several doctors have fallen ill with Ebola, and two of them have died. New reports indicate a Doctors Without Borders staff member has contracted the virus in Liberia and will be evacuated to France for treatment.

“You can see that these doctors, who are highly trained people, got themselves infected,” said Dr. Lee Hieb, former president of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. “So sending troops into an area, if they’re dealing one-on-one with a patient, they’re not going to be able to protect themselves very well. It’s not easy to [prevent transmission], because you get tired and you get careless and you make some simple mistakes. All it takes is one virus particle.”

Dr. Hieb said quarantine measures should be taken to control the outbreak and prevent Ebola from coming to America.

“You don’t get Ebola from Europe,” she told WND. “You get Ebola from Africa. And it’s a really simple formula: Don’t let people fly to America if they’ve been to areas where there’s an outbreak. When there’s an outbreak, stop air [traffic] flow.”

Hieb added, “If they’re going to use the troops to do population control, which is one of the ways you contain it, basically you just don’t let anybody out. You’d make a ring around where it is, and you’d quarantine the area.”

“”This dramatic increase in U.S. commitment comes alongside beefed-up responses from several countries, largely focused on Sierra Leone. The Cuban government is sending 165 health professionals to that country; China is deploying 59 health workers; the U.K. government has promised to construct a 62-bed hospital in the country’s capital, Freetown; and many other nations have promised other modest forms of assistance. The French government, on a significantly more modest level, has committed 20 experts in biological disasters to its former colony Guinea.
At the behest of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, the Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on the Ebola crisis on Thursday; it is only the second disease-focused gathering in the body’s history.””

Jane...that happened in the ‘lock-down area’.... our soldiers will be working in unsecured areas NOT on lock-down...so these people cannot be controlled from these events happening time and again.

Basic epidemiological controls for infectious diseases are not being followed. Any graduate of a MPH program can literally see hundreds of time tested protocols being ignored. Most veterinarians taught in controlling diseases in populations can see that this is one large bungle. There should be names attached to the implementation for this debacle so those of us that are left can attribute blame to them should they survive. Obama isn't the only idiot letting this pass.

LOL...leave it to the French to cover their own area of intersts!

Anything that involves Samantha Power cannot be good.

I caught Judge Jeanine’s show (on Fox), minutes ago. She had great interviews with Gen Boykin and Dr Bob Arnot (Infectious Disease, former military). They BOTH agreed that this is NOT an operation our troops should be involved with.

You can see my recap posts upthread.

That’s the point that Dr Arnot was making on Judge Jeanine’s show, a few minutes ago.

He stressed that our military medical teams ARE completely capable of setting up for numerous things....radiation, biological attacks, etc. They’re set up to do a lot of things...but NOT for working with Ebola....because of how it spreads.

The UN will have their people in Africa, they said, by the end of the month.

Here’s why they killed the ‘medical team’ of nine who they found dead.

....”violence broke out, allegedly sparked by the false belief that ‘a disinfectant being sprayed was actually the disease itself’..... An angry mob brandishing machetes, stones, and knives lashed out.

Some of the relief workers were lucky enough to escape to nearby villages.... At least nine were not.... Three had their throats slashed. ....By then, villagers themselves began to flee.... Those still in Womey cut down trees and fashioned makeshift blockades so no one else could get inside the village...... Two days later, when authorities did, they found eight bodies ‘in the latrine system’ of the local school. Among the dead,... three local radio journalists,... two medical officers, and a preacher.

Two months earlier in Kolo Bengou, a remote part of Guinea 400 miles from the capital, terrified villagers attacked ambulances and dismantled bridges to keep doctors out.

Let me guess, the Democrats are already labeling these doctors “terrorists” right?

Extortion 17, the Sequel. The final list of 3,000 will have been carefully compiled representing the most conservative, patriotic troops.

So sad. How do you effectively work in a situation like that?

How would you like to be one of our troops and assigned any mission?

This guy would betray you faster than you can say ‘Help!’

After Benghazi, no way...

You just don’t....Reminds me of a time there was a kid in the hospital kicking and screaming when Dr’s were trying to help...even with the mother holding him down they could not treat him...they finally sedated him.

This is what it is trying to treat these people who believe all this is purposely to take their lives.

I can’t stand to think about it. Knowing what we know. Imagine the parents of these troops, as well. It’s just heartbreaking.

I agree. There’s a reason why it’s a good idea to have ex-military as presidents. There are exceptions, Carter and Reagan being two.

This guy we have now is either clueless, or working for the other team. (possibly in more ways than one)

It would be best if they had two teams working tandem. The medical team to handle the patients and the military to protect the medical team.

The troops should not get anywhere near the patients, but they should keep the muslim nuts from entering the patient areas and stealing the soiled bed linen which could possibly be turned into bio-weapon material.

Everything he does is to weaken, and undermine America. An agent of Satan, surely. With a strong free country leading the world, there can be no world government.

I agree, but when we’re talking world government, the Republicans are fully on board. It’s the NAU that is driving them now with open borders IMO.

They are rapidly approaching one step down from Obama, again IMO.

support for the Accra, Ghana, “air bridge” for transport of supplies and personnel to the epidemic,

Yeah...and what's coming BACK on the "air bridge"....?

My guess will be another load of unaccompanied children, and assorted islamics.
