Boston Globe ^ | October 20, 2014 | Mike Stobbe (AP)

Revised guidance for health care workers treating Ebola patients will include using protective gear ‘‘with no skin showing,’’ a top federal health official said Sunday, and the Pentagon announced it was forming a team to assist medical staff in the United States, if needed.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said those caring for an Ebola patient in Dallas were vulnerable because some of their skin was exposed...

The CDC guidance was expected as early as Saturday, but its release has been pushed back while it continues to go through review by experts and government officials...

The saddest part was the head of the CDC’s insistence that what was recommended was sufficient - it defied basic common sense!

I feel bad for Frieden.

His job isn't to implement common sense, because common sense is wrong often enough to require data and analysis for proper decision-making.

What he did wrong was to take a strong position out ahead of the data, which turned out to be wrong, and then he decided to double-down following the standard Bureaucrat Self-Protection Manual.

OK, OK, I don't feel THAT bad for him.

But when the story is written, I would love to know who it was that brought the heat on him to do what he did.

How they were infected is a mystery officials say

there are two kinds of unknowns in this world, unknowns that probably won't kill you and unknowns that probably will kill you. Folks should probably consider that before making assumptions about Ebola, especially if there's a real possibility that you will have to stand in a room with it.

The people making these decisions have no intention of being anywhere NEAR those rooms.

They’ll learn plenty from your mistakes though.

Realize that the workers who came down with Ebola were operating under protocols of gown, gloves, breathing mask, and a face shield...no head-covering or shoe covers, and bare necks. All one had to do was to brush ones’ hair from your face and then rub your eye, and boom, infection.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I checked the CDC web site, and I did not see the updated guidance-just an in process notation.
