Suspect's past would have prevented gun ownership: expert

A leading firearms expert and criminal defence lawyer says he would have been “shocked beyond words” to learn that Ottawa shooting suspect Michael Zehaf Bibeau had obtained his gun legally in Canada.

Solomon Friedman, who was locked in his downtown office for much of the day Wednesday as Ottawa police attempted to secure Parliament Hill and the surrounding buildings, says several layers of safeguards are in place to ensure that a person like Zehaf Bibeau does not have legal access to firearms. The former Quebecer, who shot and killed a reservist guarding the National War Memorial before moving up to Parliament’s Centre Block and opening fire, had a criminal record that included convictions for drug possession, uttering threats and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

“Anytime you’re convicted of any type of serious criminal offence — anything dealing with drugs or violence — the judge has an opportunity to impose a firearms prohibition on you,” Friedman explained. “They exercise that regularly.”

RCMP confirmed late Thursday that Zehaf Bibeau had indeed been banned from owning a gun.

WHAT!!!!!!! He was prohibited from possessing a weapon but somehow managed to have one anyway. They obviously need more laws in Canada to prevent these sorts of things from happening ever again.

Yeah, riiiiight.

Muslim jihadis couldn’t possibly obtain guns should they want them in Canada.

Or the U.S.

Or in the U.K.

And Obama has a measurable I.Q. too.

Somehow I don’t think concern about legalities was foremost in his thoughts.

The idea of placing unarmed guards in military dress is preposterous. There is no point in having a disabled weapon.

An obvious detail they refuse to consider, preferring to blame the availability of a gun. You’d think the hatchet jihadist would have silenced any of those blaming the crime on the gun.

Wow! It’s almost like gun control laws only work on people who follow the law.

Go figure.

In other words, law breakers don’t obey laws...do I have that right?

“There is no point in having a disabled weapon.”

Exactly. He would have been better off with a baseball bat or a spear.

I read the comments at the original article. None of them mentioned the fact that the shooter is a jihadi. PC morons ALL have the blood of innocents on their hands and are going to get more killed.

Why did that poor soldier at the War Memorial not have ammunition in his rifle?”...Well, obviously, it was a Gun Free Zone, sheesh.

Speaking of guns...did anyone see the pic of this guy in the act? To me it looks like he brought a lever gun to the party.

Does Canada have geostationary spy satellites that keep track of every barnyard double-barrel Pappy Yoakum scattergun in their nation?

Because that’s what this Jihadi used: An old side-by-side farm shotgun.

He MUST have gotten it from America. Nobody in Canada has high tech weaponry like that!

I would imagine that the local mosque has a lending program for beheading knives, small arms, suicide belts, etc. No need to return the item if you have proof of martyrdom.

Yep. Two elite soldiers, honor guardsmen, stood duty with unloaded M-16s. What a shame.

I’m hearing/reading it was a Winchester 30/30.

Won’t be good if he bought it in the USA for cash outside a gun show. If he was a crackhead living in a mission, I wonder how he afforded it.

Was thinking about the hunter types who feel their guns are more acceptable to the gun banning liberals than ‘evil black guns’. Ill be interested to see how this all plays out. It was also curious that he chose a lever gun...certainly an interesting choice.

Unless the King is afraid of his military.
