Cornel West: Judging Islam by ISIS Same As Judging Christianity for Lynching Blacks

Appearing on Friday's Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, Democratic Socialists of America member Cornel West said that judging Islam by ISIS would be the same as judging Christians for killing Jews and lynching blacks.

West was confused at the idea that a majority of Muslims around the world agree with the mission of ISIS. (Apparently he did not watch Ben Shapiro's squelching of "The Myth of the Tiny Radical Muslim Minority.") West maintained that only the "right-wing version of Islam" is responsible for the atrocities aimed at non-Muslims.

"The juxtaposition between liberals versus Islam is Islam is homogenous -- there are prophetic Islamic figures who argue for liberties, for tolerance, for equality -- beginning with Malcolm X … There's a whole tradition within Islam that argues for rights, tolerance and equality," West said.

Maher, who has been in the hot-seat recently for famously shutting down Ben Affleck's rose-colored view of Islam, simply responded, "I don't see it." He doubled-down, if not tripled-down, saying the vast majority of Muslims agree with killing people for leaving Islam and marrying the wrong person.

West tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to push Maher's argument aside by making a startling suggestion that judging Islam by ISIS would be akin to judging Christianity by those American Christians who killed black people. He said:

The history of Christianity killing Jews, or the history of American Christians killing black people would be the only statement for Christianity. That's simply not true.

black people would be the only statement for Christianity. That's simply not true.

"ISIS is genocidal, it's fascist, it's ugly, it's barbaric -- Yes!" West agreed, but he would not acquiesce that the majority of Islam supports the those terrorists. Maher tried to make him see that this would be the same as saying, "I would never join the Ku Klux Klan, but I'm a big fan…BIG fan." But West couldn't see this "connecting tissue."

Yet, Maher and West did come together on one point: blaming America for its hand in exasperating the problem. Maher said:

I'm with [West]. Let's get real: colonialism, including American colonialism, does have something to do with the problems in the Middle East -- as does poverty, as does education.

But Maher parts with West saying, "Don't throw religion out of the mix, because that's the main one."
