Our WalMart* used to be like yours. We aren’t trapped, we’re overrun. A lot of people are moving to Texas for the jobs, lower taxes, and other reasons. We have experienced a rapid increase in the general population (and ethnicities) in our suburban areas lately.
WalMart* and Sam’s are building new stores and closing old stores all over the place to accommodate the new economic growth. But the new growth in population has overwhelmed the existing stores and things have deteriorated since they were built. And a lot of rural areas are no longer rural but suburban.
Anyway, Texas is still conservative and a lot of people are coming to Texas for that reason too.
Texas is changing because of the economic growth, and it may not be exactly like the one you lived in previously. But if you are a conservative come on down. We're going to keep Texas conservative and we need all the conservative help we can get.
Trust me, no one in my family is anywhere close to the Center. I’m hoping to get the job. I’m happy with the one I have now, but to work dispatching the big planes is a dream..

I live in a Seattle Suburb.
I have two WalMarts within close driving range.
The one closer is in a relatively upscale town. Very nice store, very nice people.
The other is like the bar scene for Star Wars.

I’ve got to tell you I hear more negative things than positive about Texas recently, including your own comment. I know the good stuff and people are still there, just quiet and out of the headlines, but the rest is becoming a landmine.
One of the reasons I would never move west of the Cascades.
As the older WalMart*s close and reopen in new locations, some of the unruly customers are finding they have to drive further. I've seen only a few of them and the odd Star Wars types in the new Walmart* locations. Don't know what to expect when the old locations close.
BTW, the prices among different locations in my area vary, so some Walmart*s are cheaper than others, even allowing for differences in sales tax some are significantly high enough to avoid. Also their inventory may vary and some items are not available at all stores.
But I will continue to shop at WalMart* as long as they have the cheapest price and are convenient.
If you're looking for perfection then Texas ain't for you. We have the same faults, but we accept them and deal with them differently. We try to be conservative and avoid the liberalism that is destroying our country.
Don't believe all the negative things you hear about Texas either. It won't bother me if you do or don't. I'm not out to hide the warts and pimples nor defend Texas. It is what it is. Those who live here either love it or can leave it. My own comments may seem critical but I can assure there is no state I would rather live in than Texas. It's a people, a culture, and spirit I love.
Hope that is enough for you to get my drift.
There are two Walmarts nearby. One is in an exurb near some poorer rural areas. That Walmart is where the white trash take their children to discipline them. The other is more “urban,” and I refer to it as the “zombie apocalypse.” I do not often patronize either store.
As for Dayton, I had some business there about 10 years ago. The downtown is a dump. There wasn’t a building newer than about 1970 vintage.
Some fun facts for those who don't know Dayton.
The Dayton Mall USED to be considered upscale.
A nice place to shop, with fine stores. Hardly any persons of color went there in the 70s.
Miamisburg used to be a very white city. So "white" that it was a "sundown town" (or so I was told).
But that would have been in the 1960s.
The Beef Wellington looks amazing.

Texas is the best place I’ve lived in the US. It’s not perfect but no place is perfect.
The mailing address is Miamisburg, but the mall and that WalMart are located in Miami township.
We lived there for 33 years and our children graduated from M’burg schools. Good school system, solid middle class to upper middle class area.
But everything has changed since the civil rights groups have forced the creation of bus routes and stops right at the entrances. In fact, they are currently demanding more.
By the way, what is a “sundown town”? Never heard that expression before.
I operate a business here. I dream sometimes of commuting across the pass.
A "sundown town" was a white town where anyone "undesirable" Better leave by sundown or they'd get their rear ends beat.
Usually it referred to blacks, but in other parts of the country it referred to Hispanics, and Indians.
