I’m all too aware of his leftist views (sigh).
Thanks for the warning. I’ll be sure to avoid it.
.
Yes class of 1998 who are the two you think are libs ?
CNN was pimping this all night on New Years Eve. I think I’ll pass.
Who was a good film critic then? At his best he gave wide mainstream exposure to great films and filmmakers. How many people found out about Ikiry, the films of Dreyer and Tati because of him...
Ikiru?
Siskel wasn’t really a film buff. He viewed it as a job and never displayed much knowledge of film technique or history.
A film about a film critic?
Why?
I think your prediction is probably spot-on; incidentally, the director of “Life Itself” (Steve James) was also the responsible for the basketball documentary “Hoop Dreams,” which Ebert absolutely loved. So in a sense, Steve James owed his career to Roger Ebert, so I’m expecting less biography and more hagiography.
In fairness, Hoop Dreams was a great film, and Ebert was correct when he lambasted Hollywood for failing to nominate it the “best documentary” category back in 1994. He also exposed the hypocrisy of the selection committee in that category, which (essentially) panned every entrant except the documentaries they wanted in contention. Despite that, Ebert was back slopping at the Hollywood trough in no time, and conveniently “forgot” that some of his friends deliberately rejected a very deserving documentary.
From his early days at the Chicago Sun-Times (late 60s) until the late 80s/early 90s, Ebert was one of the best writers on film, bar none. But once he became a brand and felt compelled to share his superior liberal vision with the rest of us, he was insufferable.
It’s a film about a writer. There have been lots of them - also an adaptation of one of the best written American memoirs of recent decades.
His politics became dominant almost entirely after Siskel died in 1999. It was a combination of that and B.D.S. which obviously started the following year.
A commie who gave bad movie reviews. No thanks.
Judging by ansel12’s past posts, I’m guessing that he thinks I’m one of them. I have no idea who the other person is. Perhaps ansel12 will identify him or her for us.
If I turn on CNN, that means their viewership will double and I don’t want to be responsible for that.
Which film critic do you like?
Make your own guesses.
Don't waste your time on that egoistic liberal elitist snob.
This is a much better read:
How was he a snob? I met him a few times and he was anything but.
He hated conservatives, and got very vocal about his hatred in his last years. He also married a black woman. It is a shame that Gene Siskel is now overshadowed by this ghost of a liberal.
