To think that, in this “enlightened” age, the best they can come up with for the destiny of mankind is a comic-book plot.

Arthur Clarke observed the humans are over optimistic in the short-run and under optimistic in the long run. A farmer in 1840 might have wished for stronger horses or sharper plows but would not have dreamed of an air conditioned John Deere tractor with a CD player.

Likewise we imagine some better analog to our chemical rockets and space shuttles but the truth is, we probably simply can’t imagine the actual development that will make humans a galactic presence. I do believe we are destined to occupy much more than one planet or just one solar system. There’s simply too much real estate to let it go to waste.

“Ancient myths told of a place called Earth, but the modern world knew it was nonsense. Science knew the Ship was all the Universe, and as long as the sacred Converter was fed, lights would glow and air would flow through the miles of metal corridors. Hugh never questioned these truths until a despised mutie showed him the Control Room and he learned the true nature of the Ship and its mission.”

we will have to set up bases on most of the planets and then large stations spaced out between solar systems that act like gas stations and/or pit stops.

It will still take a LONG time to get places, but we WILL get there if we are determined.

The vast distances between solar systems combined with the speed-of-light limit puts severe constraints on the realities of space travel This could be overcome using some form of worm hole or warp drive

No Problemo.

As in the movie, the question remains, will mankind live and survive on earth until this time?

Only IF you can pick the planet you want to inhabit... for example.... all the people who don’t want to work... can go to their own planet....etc. :)

HAH,
Given that the US must pay the Russians ~ $70 million dollars a seat to take our astronauts into orbit, we cant even get them there ourselves, should pour some cold water on these Star Trek like fantasies.

If the “threat” we are talking about is Global Warming then yes, space travel will solve it.

Only if there is not God and He does not love humanity would we have to attempt to look elsewhere to ensure the human race does not die out. But so many people who advance space travel for this very existential reason think that in doing so humanity can somehow escape the inherent failures of humanity.

If we could travel to other habitable planets, those new societies would soon be beset by the very problems humans have on this one.

Happily, there is a Creator God and He has a plan for humans to transcend their failures. However, the step that is in the immediate future is not so pleasant. It involves allowing humanity to fully experience the fruits of following the god of this world. See Revelation 12:12.

Sure. Why not.

I read a very good non-fiction book on this topic that I cannot remember the name of and would love to read again. Within the last 15 years or so. Any help would be appreciated.

Will interstellar space travel save humanity? Scientists predict artificial ‘homes’ in space will have to a become a reality - and say ‘warp drives’ could be the answer The vast distances between solar systems combined with the speed-of-light limit puts severe constraints on the realities of space travel This could be overcome using some form of worm hole or warp drive Another world would likely have an environment that is unbreathable Terraforming is an option, but this would be challenging and expensive Interstellar-style spinning habitats would be a more sensible option

Will leprechauns and unicorns save humanity? Scientists predict mystical ‘creatures’ in middle Earth will have to a become a reality - and say ‘pixie dust and magic’ could be the answer. The vast distances between enchanted forests combined with the Giant and Orc limit puts severe constraints on the realities of flying wizards. This could be overcome using some form of Magick or Seeing Crystals. Another world would likely have an enchantment that is unbreakable. Building vast castles is an option, but this would be challenging and expensive. Sword-wielding elven armies would be a more sensible option.

Shoot, might as well have written it my way.

Save us from what, exactly?

We’ve already been saved, we’re just waiting for the max number of people to accept the invitation.
