McDonald's CEO Don Thompson steps aside, stock jumps [PHOTOS]

Amid a tumultuous past year for McDonald's, the world's biggest restaurant chain's CEO Don Thompson is retiring after two years on the job, effective March 1. The fast food is also getting a new CFO.

The restaurant's Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer Steve Easterbrook will replace Thompson, who is a 25-year veteran of the company, the company announced on Wednesday.

Previously, Easterbrook served as president of McDonald's Europe and led the chain's "efforts to elevate its marketing, advance menu innovation, and create an infrastructure for its digital initiatives," it said in a release. The company's CFO Pete Bensen will also transition to the role of chief administrative officer while Kevin Ozan, the company's current corporate controller, will become the chain's new CFO.

I won't go near a McDonalds. Loitering gangsters, bad food, terrible service, etc.

The fired CEO, Thompson, has nearly ruined the company.

Black Girl at McDonalds

I would much prefer to go to Chick Fil A. Great service, clean, the food is decent for the price, and they play Christian music on the speaker in the dining area.

Thompson also spent tens of millions on an advertising campaign aimed specifically at blacks.

"McDonalds Black 365" was supposed to communicate that the company "celebrated black history 365 days a year!"

Can you even imagine a company spending millions on a campaign called "White 365?"

The worst part, however, was the service and the food. I go sick on a breakfast that I threw away after one bite - and I have not been back since.

And they don't understand why paying customers have been avoiding the place in droves.

Woo Hoo! Are you all maybe Apple elites also? You have all travelled to and experienced every location? I guess you don’t have any problem with Carl’s targeted and overly sexual ads.

The menu and store renovations in the past few years have been a huge improvement. I prefer BK burgers, but overall, McDonald’s is still my go-to fast food place.

Hmmm...I never bothered to look up the CEO for McDonalds, but I did notice a shift in their marketing over the last couple of years. The marketing was clearly directed towards a specific demographic, of which I was not a member nor did I identify with it.

Now I understand. This appears to be similar to the JC Penny CEO who decided identity marketing was more important than marketing for revenue.

McD’s is essentially for kids and teens...they’re usually dry, bland and rely on the toppings for flavor.

The quality of their burgers cannot compare to their competitors in most cases...even the so called “craft” burgers are light years better than McD’s that there really is no point in comparing them.

Discerning eaters are finding many, way better options out there.

My preferences for FF burgers in order are:
In-n-Out
5 Guys
Whataburger (had ‘em in Texas, good eats)
Carl’s
Jack in the Box

I eat very little fast food these days, but if I want it, I’ll go to CFA. The employees see me with a cane — they’ll bring my food to me or help me carry it. They believe in treating their customers with care and compassion. You won’t get that at McDonald’s.

At one time I had stock in McDonald’s back in the day when it seemed the company could do no wrong. Those days are long gone.

Never heard of the “Black365” campaign, but there’s no question that their TV commercials and overall advertisting had been aimed at (IMHO) black urban 13-25 yr olds and Hispanics over the past few years.

“Thompson also spent tens of millions on an advertising campaign aimed specifically at blacks.”

I noticed that myself, and I figured his days were numbered when the advertising changed recently.

I never understood why the marketing was directed at gangstas, either, since that was clearly not the original market and not a market anybody would want to attract. But then, I’d never seen a picture of the CEO.

I eat very little fast food so they probably don’t care. I do eat it on trips where I’m driving, though, and McDonald’s has been getting worse and with a trashier clientele. From what people tell me, I assume it’s because of their ads, although I have never actually seen them because they’re directed at a market that wouldn’t include me.

Don’t have either drive in close by but my two favorites are In-n-Out here in the West and Whataburger in Texas. I can dimly recall how good McDonalds burgers and fries were back in the early 1960s when that’s all they sold, burgers, cheese burgers and fries. Shame they went downhill.

The district manager of our local McDonalds was incredible; absolutely thought outside the box, would do extensive ‘craft’ grade projects to promote new items, always was entertaining going to one of her restaurants as there’d always be a little surprise somewhere on property that tied in with the current promotion.

Restaurants she managed would be clean, employees eager to serve (because if they're not helping customers, they were cleaning), and extremely fast. Rather than reward such a creative and productive force with a larger management position, the chain just left her in the position for years. When a local Chipotle opened, their district manager went to the McDonalds across the street, saw the homegrown promotional displays, asked about it, and then immediately offered her a job with Chipotle.

She's now a valued troubleshooter for the company, taking over under-performing districts and turning them around, saving thousands of jobs from restaurants which otherwise would close.

McDonalds has tons of talent within their ranks who have proven leadership skills that they should be cultivating and recruiting for corporate.

Hey, I’ve got an idea for the new CEO: make the Big Mac actually taste delicious instead of tasting like cardboard.

I love Five Guys. I get it with fried onions, jalapenos, and BBQ sauce.

If I am jonesing for a fast food burger and no Five Guys is close by, I'll go to Wendy's. If I want chicken, I go to Chick-Fil-A. McD's is only good for the fries.

I'm really wondering where you live that you encounter all these problems and see the need to constantly post rants. Peoples' taste varies on food, but none of those problems exist here. Regarding the breakfasts, McD is probably the safest place I can go in terms of food hygiene.
