Vaccine Critics Turn Defensive Over Measles
New York Times ^ | 1/30/2015 | JACK HEALY and MICHAEL PAULSON

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Their children have been sent home from school. Their families are barred from birthday parties and neighborhood play dates. Online, people call them negligent and criminal. And as officials in 14 states grapple to contain a spreading measles outbreak that began near here at Disneyland, the parents at the heart of America’s anti-vaccine movement are being blamed for incubating an otherwise preventable public-health crisis.

Measles anxiety rippled thousands of miles beyond its center on Friday as officials scrambled to try to contain a wider spread of the highly contagious disease — which America declared vanquished 15 years ago, before a statistically significant number of parents started refusing to vaccinate their children. In recent days, new measles cases popped up in Nebraska and Minnesota, New York and Marin County in California. Officials around the country reported rising numbers of patients who were seeking shots, as well as some pediatricians who were accepting non-vaccinated families but were debating changing their policies. The White House urged parents to listen to the science that supports inoculations...

Yeah, polio and an iron lung sound real attractive...and you can't get it again....we don't need none of those vaccination things....SAD.

What is it about people that defend vaccines and this need to confuse the issue?

Of course I had a polio vaccination, ditto for small pox, diphtheria, and one or two others.

No, we weren't vaccinated against what were considered to be CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES. This was the 50’s, the middle of the baby boom, and a huge number of young kids. And pretty much EVERY kid I went to school with got the measles, mumps, and chickenpox. And not one had any kind of serious problem with them. It was just considered part of childhood - no big thing at all. I guess there just weren't enough big drug companies around to make these childhood illnesses into a big deal.

I am old enough to remember getting the Polio Vaccine in Elementary School.

A Childhood Friend acquired Polio before the Vaccine was available. Lucky for him, he was only left with an obvious limp, but it could have been much worse for him.

If people want to live on a deserted Island, they don’t need to Vaccinate their Kids. Living in Society changes the Rules IMHO.

If I live next door to someone, I can’t justify burning Tires on my land because the smoke will drift over to my Neighbors Property. The same rule applies when it comes to Vaccinations.

Just my $.02, your mileage may vary.

I have not seen that such people can be reasoned with, or that they exhibit any particular ability to understand scientific or mathematical concepts.

Agreed. Like global warming fanatics, they are true believers and as such are impermeable to rational discourse. Save your breath (or keystrokes) for those who can still process information.

“If people don’t like it, no problem, we never asked for their opinion and I will continue to use my doctor who feels the same way we do about vaccinations.”

But since you posted your point of view, I hope you don’t mind if I give you mine. If you find a doctor who feels the same way as you on vaccinations of children, he’s an idiot, and so is his patient.

Are you aware of wild polio cases anywhere that aren’t related to the oral vaccination?

My oldest daughter is 45 and she had the MMR. Prior to that, there was a measles alone vaccine given at 1 year.

I had the measles and the mumps (missed rubella but was shipped to my grandmother's for 2 weeks when my mother contracted that when I was a child). I had injected polio vaccine in the late 50's and then the oral in the early 60s. The public schools were opened on Sundays to be vaccine clinics for oral (Sabin) vaccine. This was in Philadelphia. Yes, it was a big deal - not mandatory but much desired.

To the best of my knowledge I do not know anyone who has been harmed by any vaccinations.

” real diseases and get forever immunity anyway.”

The good thing about your position on this is that if your children die from preventable disease, they also get “forever immunity” so really, it’s win-win.

“Fine, keep your at home and don’t infect public schools, libraries, transportation, entertainment etc etc etc...PATHETIC “

Of course, if your kids are vaccinated, you have no worries...

You are judging “standards” of Mexican medicine based on an American-created, Spanish-language educational soap opera? Hahahahahahahahaha

“I can play that game.”

I hope you have fun playing “name that sodomite” forgive me if I decline to play.

You’re still an idiot for not vaccinating your kids, whether you are a sodomite or not.

“You are correct. People who don’t vaccinate their kids put everyone else at risk. Outrageous.”

Wait. Which is it? Vaccinations work or vaccinated kids are put at risk by those that aren’t vaccinated??

Watch for this issue to escalate, pitting faith based Americans versus their countrymen, conservative and liberal.

I must be a prophet. I served my country in the military to die for your right to disagree with me ;-). But I am certainly glad you are not running the country...

“Of course, if your kids are vaccinated, you have no worries...”

And what about kids who are too young to be vaccinated? How about kids (and others) who have weakened immune systems and cannot be vaccinated? THOSE are the people who are most protected by herd immunity, and who are put directly at risk by anti-vaxxers.

Wherever it was filmed, it is a soap opera. Not a realistic medical show.

5 deaths from measles in 15 years is certainly an epidemic to be afraid of...

“And what about kids who are too young to be vaccinated?”

Don’t expose them to older kids.

“How about kids (and others) who have weakened immune systems and cannot be vaccinated?”

Don’t expose them to other unvaccinated kids.

“THOSE are the people who are most protected by herd immunity, and who are put directly at risk by anti-vaxxers.””

Nah.
