'Fresh Off the Boat' - Racist 'Hate Whitey' Comedy?
18 March 2015 | 11Th_VA

Posted on 03/18/2015 11:42:53 AM PDT by 11th_VA

Just watched my first (and last) viewing of the new TV show, 'Fresh Off the Boat' last evening. After about 10 minutes, I couldn't believe what I was watching - had this show been about any other people group it never would have made it to the studio.

The show is about a Taiwanese family that immigrates to America in the 1990's. It's main character retells his growing up in America. The father figure in the family works at a store for his brother in Washington D.C. but decides to open a restaurant in Orlando, FL. So he moves his whole family to Florida.

What happens next is basic montage of 'White Racists Stereotypes' strung together to make a story.

1) The main character wishes he was still living in D.C. - he flashes back to living there as some white tourists try and ask him where the White House is; of course they assume he can't speak English and break in to a broken American Chinese dialect while asking.

2) Next flash to the 'Western Steak House' restaurant the dad opens. Business is slow so he decides the reason "white people" aren't coming to his restaurant are, the greeter is Asian - so he proceeds to hire a white greeter.

3) The son has an ordeal as lunchtime at school when he opens the noodle dish his mom prepared for him. All the white kids are eating prepackaged 'Lunchables' and ask him to leave the table because his food smells. He moves to another table where a black kid sits, and the black kid says, "I guess those white people weren't as accommodating as you thought they would be."

This was pretty much the theme for 30 minutes.

From what you say, the jabs are at White people, but it sounds like there could be a certain amount of "blowback."

That is to say, a lot of viewers may be so turned off by the main characters that they really come to dislike them.

You know, sort of like how George Lopez set Mexicans back years because he was so hard for the rest of the country to take.

In primary school in Fairfax, I only remember one Japanese girl in my class. I get along very well with my classmates, I remember vividly one day at lunch, everyone gave me their rice side dish because they didn’t like it, some of the kids even sneak in the other side dish, mix vegetables. I kept eating and pile up the Styrofoam cups like a tower. fun times, until the teacher came and took the cup tower away.
I didn’t meet any other people of my age who speak Chinese while growing up, most Asians I met in school were Koreans, Vietnamese, and Cambodians.

Saw an episode a few weeks ago.
It was not the typical smart alecky kid and possible smart alecky parents, with Asian twist, a good script/story line, but rather some R or X rated stuff - couldn’t believe this was on Network T.V.

I had understood (reason undeclared . .) the mom had some really funny dialog, which got me to thinking the dialog was going to reflect a warm Asian stereotype, with the mom gathering many fans.

So much for assuming - - -

I’m 10 years older than you.

My wife is from Taiwan. Her family is from YangMei but she grew up mainly in Taipei.

Where we live the High School is 80% Chinese or more (from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines) with also probably some other East Asian. Other high schools around are also similar.

It’s a huge Chinese community and it’s very vibrant and dynamic.

It would have been quite a different experience for you growing up if you were ten years younger and your family had moved to San Gabriel or somewhere around here.

Mistakes is right.
She wasn’t funny. And she wasn’t lovable - - - sorry - viewers seem to have to like the characters. Even love to hate them.

Coincidentally, I see the actress in this show, Constance Wu, grew up in Richmond.

She was born in 88.

I saw this for the first time last night ,, I’m white and married to an asian gal ,, 22 years... this show was not in the least funny ,,, cringeworthy from beginning to end... Not only full of white bashing but male bashing also ,,, the father is pathetic.... stupid and racist.

I guess this is not totally off topic: I just saw on Jeopardy that Ho Chi Minh City is named after a freedom fighter.

I am now seeing red which I guess is what Ho Chi Minh really was.

The founder of the Communist regime of North Vietnam was a Ho.

I read a book by Nugyen Cao Key in which he mentions that his Father fought under Ho Chi Minh during WWII. He said Ho kept the fact that he was a Communist a secret.

Key said many of them would never have supported him if they had known.

Yes, the wife and I watched for about ten minutes. I had a notion it was going to be like that. But I had to check it out. Every negative stereotype about white people trotted out in the first ten minutes.

The show was derived from a book written by somebody who had supposedly experienced those things. Imagine some white person creating a "comedy" using all the stereotypes about east Asians or other ethnic groups.

The trainer asked the definition of racism. I said when one group oppresses another group simply due to the color of their skin. I was wrong. I was schooled that it is ‘Whites, who have the power, discriminating against Blacks, who don’t have the power’. Blacks, by the new definition, cannot be racist because they don’t have the power. It was certainly eye-opening for me.

Late at night on a dark street, a guy with a knife has more power over your fate than the whole federal government.

The "knockout game", the various gruesome murders of whites by blacks -- do let anybody tell you that blacks can't be racist because they "have no power".

The reality is that, in the workplace and on the streets, it's middle-class whites who have no real power, and thus by that criterion cannot be racist.
