Once again, the firebrand senator is betting that his best shot to win is breaking the old rules.
Ted Cruzs decision to launch his presidential campaign on Monday breaks all the customs of a typical candidate announcement.
Presidential hopefuls tend to kick off the quest for the White House on home turf, after forming an exploratory committee and at the beginning of a new fundraising period, which allows them to maximize the amount of time they can spend raising money before filing their first report. In contrast, the Texas Senator will declare his intentions during a convocation speech at Liberty University in Virginia, forgoing an exploratory committee to formally jump into the race in the final weeks of the first quarter.
Cruzs move, which was first reported by the Houston Chronicle and confirmed by TIME, may be unconventional. But since arriving in the Senate in 2013, the firebrand Texan has bet that the new way to win in politics is to break the old rules....

Go TED!
How is Cruz breaking any old rules? He’s entered into the primaries for the people to decide his fate. That seems to be both proper and fair to me. Go Ted!
My instinct is that the Democrats think Cruz is easily beatable. They are therefore handling him with kid gloves. We shall soon see about that theory.
If I'm right, then Ted is a Trojan Horse.
Maybe these rules are the ones that dictated that it was McCain's "turn" in 2008?
Agreed. It seems to me that Cruz and Walker are catching the most flak at this point. To me that is a good thing.
Conservatives are really known by their enemies and at this point, these two are catching the most. Both good men, I hope there are one or two more added to this short list.
Then over the next few months, we can see which one can withstand the onslaught without coming apart. THAT will be our candidate.
Read the Time article.
I keep trying to think of one single reason why a democrat should ever be President again and I keep coming up with nothing.
Even the worst publican President is going to be light years better than any dem Prez.
I started writing this post thinking there would be some sarcasm in it somewhere but after finishing it I can see there is nothing but truth so no /s. ;)
We’ll soon see.
Cruz has the potential of igniting a real passion among supporters - particularly younger ones. He can run an energetic campaign and is not stuck in the last century like the rest of the GOP country club conventional hacks.
Ted has to declare now...Gop.e leadership and the MSM have totally whitewashed and vaporized the message Americans sent in November.
It’s now or never. between Hansen and SCOTUS in June, he has to get past tbe media to show his battling for restoration of freedom.
Too many are losing hope with VJs pure evil.
Looks like Ted wants to break for the finish line and let all the rest of the field play catch-up.
Absolutely!
And, the problem the left will have is that Ted’s smart enough to pull it off.
I agree.
It was very unusual.
Break the rules? Have they BEEN watching Obama?
What’s so bad about being a “firebrand”?
Bush I: Not firebrand.
Dole: Not firebrand.
Bush II: Not firebrand.
McCain: Not firebrand.
Romney: Not firebrand.
Where have all those non-firebrands gotten us?
