Fact Checker: Setting the record straight: The real story of a pivotal climate-change hearing
The Washington Post ^ | April 5, 2015 | Glenn Kessler

Posted on 04/05/2015 11:35:14 AM PDT by Pharmboy

“That hearing was presided over and organized by then-Sen. Timothy Wirth (D-Colo.), who later told an interviewer that, for a bit of stage effect, he chose a particularly hot day in the summer — it turned out to be a record high — and left the windows of the hearing room open the night before. Thus witnesses were sweltering and wiping their brows as they testified about global warming.”

— The Fact Checker, “Kerry’s claim that he organized the ‘very first’ hearings on climate change,” March 18, 2015

The Fact Checker recently gave Four Pinocchios to Secretary of State John F. Kerry for repeatedly making the false claim that he organized the first Senate hearing on climate change. In the article, we recounted an often-told anecdote about the most famous climate-change hearing — the June 23, 1988 hearing at which James E. Hansen, then head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, declared it was 99 percent certain that a global warming trend was the result of human activity.

As shown in the quote above, we said the hearing was amplified for “stage effect” — a sweltering day made worse by leaving the hearing room windows open. The anecdote has been repeated in books and news articles, and Kerry often mentioned it in his remarks as if he had personally witnessed it.

For skeptics of climate change, the story has become an example of how left-leaning politicians have manipulated public perceptions on the issue.

But after the March 18 article was published, we received information suggesting that the stage-effect anecdote is simply not true. So let’s set the record straight.

This story was originally in the March 30 blog, but was published in today's print edition of WaPo. Further, the headline in the print edition was: "Who's sweating the story of choosng a steamy Washington day for a climate-change hearing?"

He really nails Kerry double at the end. Hats off to Kessler for doing the follow up. This is almost a 4-Pinocchio story.

Liberals cannot tell the truth about ANYTHING! It destroys their agenda completely. If people really understood what liberal motives were they would rise up and boil them all in recycled motor oil. (Even the LIV’s might see the light.)

Thank you for referencing that article Pharmboy. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

Even if global warming claims had been substantiated by the repeatable outcome of scientific method-based experiments that are designed to prove global warming, it remains that the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for global warming purposes.

The 17th Amendment needs to disappear. Former Senator Kerry is evidence of that.

I am sure glad that I am literally unable to post at my usual pace with an iPad, a device I never intended ever to use. But here I am with one I got for my birthday.
(I still hate it, for actual solid defensible reasons. Being able to visit FRee Republic when I travel, for one.)
The usual hysterical ignorant “Friends of the DIrt, for example, or the bugs and bunny crowd, for whom the health and welfare of human beings is always dead last in the order of priorities.
Only a truly sicko mind could characterize returning the same original chemicals in sea water back to the ocean as polluting the ocean. Assuming, of course, that those chemicals can never serve a useful purpose.

If they can't lie, they can't win.
