Florida surprise: Jeff Atwater won't run for Marco Rubio seat

Just as he looked like a front-runner to replace Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida CFO Jeff Atwater announced Saturday he would not run for the seat.

“Over the past weeks I have received a tremendous amount of encouragement to consider a run for the United States Senate in 2016,” Atwater said in a written statement. “While I have certainly taken these words of support under consideration, I will not be a candidate in 2016. I remain committed to only one endeavor and that is to be the best CFO I can be for the people of Florida.”

If Marco had a lick of sense he’d announce his bid for Senate reelection.
But then again if he had a lick of sense he would not have schemed with Schumer against the citizens.

Too bad. Atwater is a good guy and could win. I sent him some money when he ran for the Florida House. After the election he sent it back, saying he hadn’t needed it. How many politicians do that?

Why would a Florida CFO ever want to run for US Senator or anything else? The Florida CFO position is an unusually cushy job, with limited duties, a fat salary and benefits, and residence in pleasant, laid back Tallahassee, which has a low cost of living and a major state university available for any college age offspring.

In addition, the CFO has easy reelection virtually assured in the absence of a ten alarm scandal. After two or three terms, a Florida CFO has great potential to earn in the private sector based on accumulated expertise and financial industry contacts. Or, if the GOP wins the Presidency in 2016, a Florida CFO could aim for a major Washington appointment as a financial regulator or policymaker.

I actually cheer Rubio into obscurity. Yes, he runs for president and gets a few seconds of fame, not even 15 minutes as he is the 3rd “hispanic” after Cruz and Bush. Okay, Bush just thinks he is. Rubio is a nobody that probably needs to spend some time with his housemate to resolve their drug and corruption issues in Florida. Okay, so he runs and nobody notices. He also gives up his US Senate seat. Great news! one less Amnesty fanatic willing to undermine the US. Rubio will be out of work. Maybe he can then join his parents in returning home to Cuba...

Interesting. Near as I can tell, people run for the Senate for the same reason Willie Hutton robbed banks.

i liked Atwater.

Another good possible candidate is the Jewish guy from Palm Beach...I can’t recall his name now....Adam Hasner? I think that is him.

AFAIK, the guy is solid. Maybe he’ll run, emphasize Israel’s security and not sucking up to Cuba and Iran....

Let’s hope. He’s the best option. He’d be great for the FL GOP. We could flurish with his likable leadership and return to being a reliable red state in presidential years.

I think Rubio is going to back out.
The GOP-e has told him they are backing Jeb and the Tea Party is going Cruz or Walker.

No one left to support him for Pres and he will have to work HARD to keep his Senate seat.

Exactly what I was thinking. Rubio has a one man fan club in Charles Krauthammer, but if he were being realistic he’d sit tight in his Senate seat.
