Finally: Bernie Sanders will announce for president tomorrow

Longtime Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders will jump into the 2016 fray tomorrow, presenting the first official challenge to Hillary Clinton from her left. Liberal activists have been quite anxious for such a challenger, though the one they wanted was a bit younger and female. A self-described socialist in the style of the European democratic socialists, Sanders will bring fresh, innovative ideas to the table, like: Corporations are bad and have too much influence on our giant, ineffective, unaccountable government, so let’s make government bigger to fix the problem and also take a lot more money from the rich. They’re the worst. (And, more hot Koch Brother talk!)

Here’s the news from—where else?— Vermont Public Radio:

VPR News has learned from several sources that Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will announce his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday.

Sanders will release a short statement on that day and then hold a major campaign kickoff in Vermont in several weeks.

Sanders’ entry into the Democratic race ensures that Hillary Clinton will face a challenge to win the support of the liberal wing of the party.

Sanders’ basic message will be that the middle class in America has been decimated in the past two decades while wealthy people and corporations have flourished.

His opposition to a proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal (T.P.P.) shows how he plans to frame this key issue of his campaign.

He will run as a Democrat, thereby getting himself a ticket to the debate stage. He’ll announce tomorrow and hold a rally…next month. Because this thing is a rocket ship, people!

One ally — who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss Sanders’s timetable — said the 73-year-old senator is expected to make his intentions known this week and hold a rally in Vermont next month. He plans to run as a Democrat, according to his associates.

Update: Room for Berniementum?

Small sample, but… https://t.co/OE8mh4MzRW

Update: At least Hillary can fall back on her ever-present charm and transparency:

Bernie Sanders is 73 years old for those who want to know. Still younger than the Ayatollah Khameini.

Hopefully he can get some traction. It might be our best hope. If he can get 6%, then 47% will be enough to win.

Longtime Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders

Since when has Bernie ever been "independent"?

Great,

Hillary has someone who’s there to make her NOT look like a extremist.

Thank you Glass Joe.

Assuming Sen. Chief Spreading Bull D-MA does not toss her headdress into the ring, Sen. Bernie Sanders S-VT is extremely popular as well among the radical OWS types. Also assuming the Clinton scandals and corruption reports continue to mount, Sanders could actually make some headway in the Dem primaries.

Well, at least he’ll let you know he is actually a socialist. How’s that suspicious deal with his wife and the university in Burlington (not the clothing store either) coming along anyway? Not sure if she’s been cleared of anything illegal or not.

Not an official democrat (don’t know why he won’t join, ego? He’s not even the most left-wing member of Congress) but running for their nomination, unusual.

Bernie, you can’t win the nomination. You have to take it to November, I urge you to run as an independent! The American people need your help, Bernie! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

He is not running as an Independent. He is running to get the Democratic Nomination. He said he won’t be a spoiler. However, I think we have a better chance at beating him then Hillary.

This could get interesting.

This guy is a full blown socialist. With him in the race, we may actually have some sharp clear discussions of how Democrats want to push more and more socialism on us, if we elect a Democrat president in 2016 .

Of course, him being there could actually make Hillary look more moderate by comparison.

Unfortunately, he’s running for the rat nomination, not as an independent.

If he runs the same type of campaign as Obama and Deval Patric, he could win.

Say little and let the voters fill in the blanks, hope and change, si se pueda, yes we can, transform America.

"Sanders’ entry into the Democratic race "

I thought he's not a Democrat. Not officially. Well, he's even worse than a Democrat, but he claims to be an "Independent".

How can someone who isn't a Democrat run for the Democrat nomination? (If so, is he paving the way for Chris Christie to run as a Democrat?)

He’s only six years older than Hillary and can drop this independent crap now.

He would have no chance to win, none at all. But he has no chance to win the nomination, so it doesn’t matter.

Didn’t he take his wife to Moscow for their honeymoon? I wonder if he ever paid Alexander Solzhenitsyn a visit while the celebrated author lived in Vermont? Probably not, as the senator most likely would have received a real education concerning the form of government he probably still greatly admires.
