US mathematician John Nash, whose life story was turned into the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind, has died in a car crash, local media has reported.

Nash, 86, and his wife Alicia were both killed when their taxi crashed in New Jersey, the reports said.

The mathematician is renowned for his work in game theory, winning the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994.

His breakthroughs in maths - and his struggles with schizophrenia - were the focus of the film.

My wife bought some sleeves that go around the belt from Autozone or Oreilly’s Auto parts. It takes the sharp edge away and distributes the load over a larger area. Might be worth a try.

I have run enough calls where someone was ejected and ended up under a tire or under the vehicle to make me a believer that my odds are better inside.

I have also seen a “large” woman with a large ring of keys buried inside the adipose tissue of her leg after she rattled around inside of what would otherwise have been a fairly minor wreck.

Just getting home from Holiday and to read this news was just stunning. Having read much about Nash and his family's history it's hard to imagine both he and his wife are gone....

I understand the taxi driver was just two weeks on the job and had no clue who his passengers were either. Apparently a limo was initially planned for but Nashes were ahead of schedule so they hailed this cab.

Am truly stunned over this....and wonder also how his son is handling this since he also suffered the same illness as his father.

So very sorry this happened....however he did win the Mathematical Award he had always hoped for recently, and celebration of. For Nash this award out did his “Game Theory Award” he's so noted for. So I'm very happy he went out with that under his belt.

Oh I'm not saying they aren't a great idea and shouldn't be worn. Hey I think the concept is great. I'm saying far more persons would use them if they would simply address the issue I mentioned. There is no reason they can't do a lot better. It wouldn't cost that much either. IF and that is a BIG IF the whole intention is to actually get people to wear them then they need to do some major re-designing to address the issues they have had for several decades.

Even wearing a Tee shirt isn't possible for me anymore {for over 20 years now} because of the closeness to my neck. The distraction the shoulder strap triggers in me is a far, far, greater risk to myself and others safety than me not wearing a seatbelt. If moved about three inches down I could handle it. I could cut the shoulder belt portion off I suppose {as I did on a van I once owned} but that makes it useless to others who can use it. I better stop here or this will become a rant against the unending onslaught of Nanny State Laws. LOL.

No car seats for children are required either.

And of course taxis driven by people who hate our way of life are much safer than anyone’s personal car.

Our “leaders” are criminally insane, corrupt, and evil.Yet most voters refuse to see reality.

The new way to business success in the USA is buying off lawmakers to pass laws making the purchase of your product, coverage, or service, mandatory by law.

I object to the use of the word “Killed” in the title of this thread.

It’s not the poster’s fault, but the periodical they took the data from.

Killed is a word that is a verb. It denotes an action. Nobody killed Nash.

He and his wife were seriously injured in an accident and they died.

Nash and his wife died in this accident. They were not killed.

I wear a seat belt because it increases the chance I could maintain control of my car after being hit.

studies sometimes are designed to show the results desired....

no way... no how....not having some sort of seat belt, shoulder strap, etc is better than having them....

if it were the "elderly" being driven around you best believe there would be not only seat belts, but seat warmers and blankets passed out....but school buses are just for those non voting citizens called children, so they are not important.

I’m surprised that Nash never won the Fields Medal. What is the story, if any, behind that oversight? Some of my friends in mathematics think more of his work in math than the work he did in game theory that led (eventually) to his Nobel Prize in economics.

"Jag-ee-wahr."

I like how they say documentary. I say "docu-menery", they say "Doc-YOU-mint-tarry" like 4 separate words.

There was a car crash in CNY last week where two high school senior girls were killed, one being ejected from the car.

I haven’t found anything about whether they were wearing seatbelts or not, but presumably, since the one was ejected, she at least, was not.

That is sad. One of the primary functions of a safety belt is to keep occupants from being ejected. Side windows have little containment value in a collision or a roll over. You probably would not believe how easily they are broken.

Several of us mathematicians are surprised that he didn’t win the Fields Medal as well. He had done way more than necessary mathematics and made breakthroughs in many diverse areas. I was talking to a colleague about this and he speculated that when it would have been Nash’s turned they passed him up due to the mental illness.

The Abel Prize that he received and died on the way home from the ceremony in Norway, in a way, is more prestigious than the Fields Medal, although it is given towards the end of one’s career.

Data source please.

I worked as a paramedic for 5 years and NEVER saw a dead person wearing a seabelt.

Conversely I saw plenty of dead people who didn’t buckle up before starting their journey.

“Jag-ee-wahr.”

When I was over there it was “JAG-u-wuh.” I just said “Jag.” I figured for the amount of money I was paying for upkeep, I was on a first-name-basis with it.

Sorry about the late reply.
