Try $1000 fines for first offense of texting while driving with significant increases thereafter. Currently in California the first offense is just $76 and the second offense $190. Everyone is still doing it so obviously the current fines aren’t enough to cause people to take it seriously.
We lost a Nephew two years ago in a Motorcycle Accident. An Idiot Woman made a Left Turn in front of him at a Light. He was pronounced Dead at the scene. He didn’t have a chance.
The idiot Woman got Two Years Probation and lost her License for a Year. She only had Minimum Insurance Coverage since she didn’t have a Pot to Piss In or a Window to throw it out of. The Family got nearly nothing in Compensation, probably enough to Bury the Kid.
The Kid was 28, a Marine who served two Tours of Duty in Afghanistan. Came home without a scratch. Just finished College and started a great Job. His Death devastated everyone and his Mother will never get over it. He was her only Child.
Unfortunately, the City of LA doesn’t have Left Turn Signals at most Intersections in the San Fernando Valley where the Accident occurred. His Mother is working to get that changed, but LA is a pit. They’re busy spending Taxpayer Dollars supporting the Illegals, so there is only so much Money to go around.
Two Years later and it still grinds at me.
And to be clear, i was not saying the cyclist in this crash did anything irresponsible, i was replying to south40’s post where he said cyclists can tell stories of bad car drivers. It doesnt mean anything because car drivers can tell stories about bad cyclists. There are anecdotal stories of all sorts of bad drivers, driving a variety of different vehicles. Bad drivers exist and they can be found driving every type of vehicle.
You dont like reality, and want to think certain kinds of drivers are cannot be spoken ill of, while disparaging others at the same time, makes it appear you like dishing it out but you can’t take it.
I totallly agree with yu and I would feel exactly like you. It is insane how minor the penalties are for kiling someone with your car, versus a knife, handgun or bare hands. They need to be on par with 2nd degree murder/homicide, and not any less than regular manslaughter.
With multipliers if they are distrscted, texting, and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If under the influence i’d and over legal limits, i’d have them up on 1st degree murder because they had intent to get behind the wheel when they knew they had taken drugs or alcohol.
What also gets me are the illegals driving that get into accidents, and just take off. That happened to my dad.
Car Insurance is required to Register a Car. They get Insurance, Register the Car and stop making the Payments on the Insurance. Supposedly, the State is notified if the Insurance lapses. I have no idea what happens next, but I imagine it's nothing.
The Idiot Woman that killed our Nephew just wasn't paying attention and said she didn't see him coming, even though it was the middle of the day and he had one of those flashing Headlights on his Bike.
There is a reason my Parents never let me ride Street Bikes, only Dirt Bikes. When I grew up I never had the desire to compete with two Ton Vehicles driven by Idiots.
This thread is about a Navy Chief who was murdered while riding his motorcycle. He was a 20 year veteran of the Navy with multiple deployments under his belt. If you could be so kind as to show some respect for this fallen Hero and save your anti motorcycle rider comments for another thread it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
It happened to me twice in Tx in the 70s. Both were just fender benders, but one of them said he was sorry he hit my car, but he had to go, cuz he had something to do. No license, no insurance, no nothing.

You elevated it. I didn’t start it. The guy I was responding to - NOT YOU - opened the door by saying cyclists can tell all these stories about bad drivers (non motorcycles), and all I said was that other drivers could tell just as many of the same kinds of stories about bikers. I further clarified that I wans’t saying THIS guy was the problem, I was responding to the statement I mentioned above by the other poster and the fact that there are bad drivers of all motor vehicles.

However car pool lane violations, and handicap parking violations are $250 and up.
I am somewhat indifferent about parking. Car pool lane violations usually don’t involve safety.
The texting violation DOES endanger others, so if anything should cost a bundle it is that.
I have personal experience which drives home the distraction aspect of smartphone use. Even talking with Bluetooth hands free, my mind shifts focus to the call, and off the road.
