American Pharoah wins Belmont Stakes, ending 37-year Triple Crown drought

American Pharoah became the first horse in over three decades Saturday to earn the Triple Crown, placing 1st in the Belmont Stakes after winning the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby earlier in the season.

In one of the sporting world's rarest feats, the bay colt with the unusually short tail defeated seven rivals in the grueling 1 1/2-mile race, covering the distance in 2:26.65 to end the longest stretch without a Triple Crown champion in history.

American Pharoah is the 12th horse and first since Affirmed in 1978 to win three races on different tracks at varying distances over a five-week span. He won the Kentucky Derby by one length on May 2 and then romped to a seven-length victory in the rainy Preakness two weeks later.

Is American Pharoah the first Orthodox Jewish-owned horse to win the Triple Crown?

No...he put the horse into an auction...the announcer said that the owner “bought it back” at the auction for $300,000 because he had been hoping for much more. Sometimes, auctioneers will allow sellers to do that (for a fee). It is to protect their interest without there being a firm reserve.

I thought they were Muslim. I hope they are Orthodox Jewish. They were saying on TV that they are from the Middle East. Typically if they are from Israel they say Israel and not Middle East.

“Bob Baffert (whom my husband detests, and so is not pleased with the outcome of this race”

Baffert may well / may well not be a detestable guy. But I give him a lot of credit for playing himself in a pompuse detestable manor in the movie 50 to 1.

American Pharoah’s 2:26.65 looks like the 2nd fastest Triple Crown Belmont win, although it’s only the 6th fastest Belmont Stakes time.

The fastest is, of course, Secretariat in 2:24.

He is an Orthodox Jew from Egypt and must be old enough to be one of the last generations that can be called so.

In my opinion, that is great news. I am so happy he won then. I was leary at first to be honest because I thought he could have been from Iran or Syria or somewhere that hate America. This family clearly is not the case.

Great horse & great win. I've watched (real time) a few Triple Crown wins by superb horses going back over 50 years.
Not likely I'll get to see another Triple Crown winner ...

While I admittedly know nothing about horse racing, I distinctly remember a story told about Zayat selling American Paraoah but immediately regretting it and buying him back.

I looked for the story today:

http://www.nj.com/horse-racing/index.ssf/2015/06/belmont_stakes_ahmed_zayat_all_smiles_after_american_pharoah_claims_triple_crown.html

Two years ago, Zayat put American Pharoah to a yearling sale, believing the Kentucky-bred colt could fetch $1 million. When the bidding stalled at $300,000, Zayat decided to buy American Pharoah back by writing in that amount to himself.

It’s proven to be a worthy investment, as American Pharoah has career earnings of $4.5 million after winning his last seven starts

Above it says Zayat decided to buy American Paraoah back.

That’s good enough for me!

Meanwhile, racing fans HATE him.

I’m trying to figure out exactly why. Supposedly he now has big debts he owes and has been sued for it. But beyond that, I’m not sure.

Meanwhile, they FALL OVER themselves praising the constant presence of Moslem royalty such as al-Maktoum from UAE, loving him because he “loves his horses” and “treats them so well” while ignoring his Moslemness and EXTREMELY privileged status as unfairly rich (as Moslem royalty basically all are). Latter of which is why he can afford to do the best for his horses.

Jealousy is in all areas of life. No matter what you do, someone is going to despise you one way or the other. I wish I learned that lesson way earlier then I did.
