If she didn’t presume to tell every schoolchild in America what to eat, this aspiring Imelda Marcos could yet be superior to Moochelle.

Culture a priority for Bush First lady draws on Hispanic heritage
Florida Times-Union, The (Jacksonville, FL) (Published as The Florida Times-Union) - January 1, 1999

MIAMI — Multi-colored, child-size handprints cover the wall behind Columba Bush as she sits in her husband’s still-bustling campaign office, explaining how art will help make Floridians more tolerant of different cultures.

“When you can show the people who you really are, the beauty that is within you, then I think people will understand better what other cultures are about,” said Columba Bush, who hopes to make the state a mecca for major international art exhibits as Florida’s new first lady.

As Gov.-elect Jeb Bush prepares to take office Jan. 5, his Mexican-born wife will try to make her own mark. She said she plans to follow the example of her mother-in-law, Barbara Bush, and do things she’s passionate about.

And Columba Bush, who aspired to be an artist while growing up in central Mexico, is passionate about art. She’s also passionate about stopping young people from using drugs after her own family’s experience, and sees art playing a role in that goal as well.

“I really believe the arts is an option for young children to know . . . the wonderful things that they can do with their lives instead of doing something negative,” she said.

Columba Bush pictures the Governor’s Mansion decorated with the work of college students and other artists who have competed to show their work. She imagines some of the world’s most important art events — including exhibits from Egypt — traveling the state.

She’s already planning how it will work.

“The first thing to do is to start a foundation for that purpose and then based on that decide to have more programs,” she said. “We all have to work on something that will help the community.”

While not the first wife of a Florida governor to be born outside the United States — England-born Elizabeth Simpson took that title in 1849 as Gov. Thomas Brown’s wife — she is the first from Mexico.

And, according to George P. Bush, the eldest of the couple’s three children, there’s no denying Mexico flows in her blood.

“She’s passionate about life,” he said. “She’s passionate about her country, especially. What she’s all about is Mexico.”

Columba Bush said one foundation that she helps lead has allowed more than 300,000 children in the last nine years to see free U.S. performances of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.

And through Casa de la Amistad, a Mexico-based organization started in 1990, Columba Bush has worked to get medicine to children with cancer.

She may be passionate about Mexico, but she doesn’t sound like she wanted to have anything to do with her relatives or her former life in Mexico.

I am not a fan of Bush’s presidential candidacy, but I see no reason to trash his family. Especially with this kind of trash.

Jeb can only win as a democrat. So I could care less about his wife or her familia.

Agreed. This is stupid. Rubio’s wife and now Jeb’s. Apparently, trashing potential first ladies is one of the strategies we’ll continue to see. Someone is mighty desperate this early in the game.

“The first thing to do is to start a foundation"

Why not.

It worked for the clinton crime family.

I don't want Bush to be president, because I don't think his policies or leadership would be good for this country. All this other stuff just undermines the stuff.

Conservatives have made a huge mistake prioritizing personal attacks over policy attacks. It hasn't worked at all. All the ugly stuff said about Michelle Obama hasn't worked at all, it's just helped the president. It's let his failed policies succeed. Why would so many conservatives rather insult Michelle and let the President's policies go unchecked, than actually focus on those policies?

I wonder if Jeb really met her a ###### show

If you have any class at all, you will ask that your comment be removed.

That is beyond the pale.

Of course the closet Boosh worshippers here are whipped into high dudgeon by such blasphemies, so let’s just stick with “aerial dancer” ..... this and maybe the previous post (if they speak Spanish) should be wafting down the ol’ FR “I heart the Georges” memory hole before too long.

I recall some years ago consciously demeaning Michelle Obama for having "an ass as big as Nebraska," an insult which was fully calculated to counter a narrative currently the theme in the mainstream media which put Michelle on the cover of the women's magazines as a fashion and beauty icon. This was at a time when Obama was being deified by the media and it was necessary to counter that propaganda.

More, since Michelle Obama was parading herself as an icon of fashion on magazine covers, she was fair game because she had opened herself up to criticism on that level because she was using this false image as a platform upon which to impose her political philosophy on the country.

Even before Obama's election of 2008, I was preaching that we had no chance of winning unless Obama was morally destroyed. That meant that his communist affiliations and inclinations had to be thoroughly exposed and he had to be personally discredited. Of course, the opposite occurred in the media and John McCain himself put any criticism even of Obama's middle name off-limits. In that atmosphere there was nothing to prevent the catastrophe of that election.

The left must be criticized and must be criticized on its own terms because to compete in elections against them otherwise is take a knife to a gunfight. The media routinely demonizes Republicans and lionizes Democrats. One need only cite the treatment of Sarah Palin to make the argument. As an effective electoral device criticism is good but satire is much better, witness the effectiveness of the satire of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. We simply cannot forgo this tool which is probably in the long run more effective as an elective tactic than taking the high road. The creation of an image is everything, compare Truman to do we Eisenhower to Stevenson, Kennedy to Nixon, Johnson to Goldwater-well the comparisons are obvious, one need not go on because the lesson is clear: define your opponent before he can define himself and do the same with your own image. Politics is not a gentleman's game, it is a contest to impose power on others.

All that being said, this particular article by this left-wing publication is outrageous. No one has opposed the Bush family as officeholders more than I have on these threads but this is simply left-wing racialist claptrap:

Politico cites a biography about Columba Bush in which her father reportedly described her as “a bad daughter” who forgot her modest Mexican roots.

Guess you missed the comment made by her son in 1999.

And, according to George P. Bush, the eldest of the couple’s three children, there’s no denying Mexico flows in her blood.

“She’s passionate about life,” he said. “She’s passionate about her country, especially. What she’s all about is Mexico.

And so is her husband.

I don’t want my country turned into North Mexico.
