Rising tides in San Francisco Bay demand unified solutions

Every community that rings San Francisco Bay is vulnerable to rising seas. But while some places are preparing, others are not -- and no single agency is coordinating the effort, according to two new civil grand jury reports.

"It is a slow-moving emergency," said state Assemblyman Rich Gordon, D-Menlo Park, lead author of the state's first report on climate-related flooding and organizer of a conference Friday at NASA Ames Research Center called "Meeting the Challenges of Sea Level Rise."

In Santa Clara County, the water district should coordinate the county's effort, the grand jury recommended -- a project the district says it can't now assume because of its stunning $850 million price tag.

The sea is already rising because of climate change. Measurements at the Golden Gate show that San Francisco Bay rose 8 inches over the past century -- and could rise another 16 to 55 inches by 2100.

Experts at the conference agreed that the most damage won't be done by incremental encroachment of water, but by major storms and extraordinary "king tides." It is time to adapt to its inevitability -- constructing or modifying levees, elevating structures, changing building codes, restoring wetlands and abandoning low-lying areas, experts said.

The impacts of melting ice and global warming will hit California harder than most of the world because most of the state's coastline is already slowly sinking because of geological forces, a 2012 National Academy of Sciences report warned.

A lot of time and effort has already been spent forecasting the effects of sea level rise in San Francisco Bay. Hundreds of neighborhoods and dozens of Silicon Valley companies such as Google, Yahoo, Intel, Cisco and Oracle face serious threats because their buildings sit so close to the bay.

Actually, it isn’t rising tides. It is lowering landmass.

California is slipping off the plate at the fault and you all had better grow gills or get the hell away from there.

Menlo park, where the rep is from, is 72 feet above sea level. Is he expecting a 72 foot rise?

Geniuses that thet are...they didnt see this coming????

given that land masses are the PRIME MOVER..i.e. REAL CAUSE...in this “equation” one wouldhave thought....that “Google, Yahoo, Intel, Cisco and Oracle” would have given that some CONSIDERATION before building next to the beaches!!!

For those who don’t know, NASA Ames Research Center is about 5ft above sea level.
Its also known as a place where Phd’s go to play and not produce anything.

I knew someone who went to work for them for a brief period of time.
Since she didn’t have a Phd, she was treated lower than dirt.
She left after 6 months.

I wonder what the source of this bit of science is? Apparently its not worth mentioning.

I thought the tides were going to recede and the oceans were going to calm if we elected Obama...

These people should have their degrees pulled and put to work digging ditches for the rest of their lives.

Believe it or Not I’ve seen lakes rise by over 20 FEET (not inches) this year and it had nothing at all to do with global warming. These guys still think the sun revolves around the earth.

Well if it’s high tide in SF then it’s low tide somewhere else.

This is series! If that liberal cesspool goes under water then they’ll migrate east into civilized states. We don’t want them. What’s the name of that guy in mythology where everything he touches turns into donkey dung? He was from kalifornia.

There has been much land area filled in around the Bay in the past. Swampy areas that edged out into the Bay such as around the Marina District in San Francisco.
Same amount of ocean water comes in through the Golden Gate with less area to spread out.
Guessing they don’t factor that in.

So how much of the 8 inches is from ocean rise and how much is from the land sinking?

The first thing they should do is update the FEMA maps and require all the folks living in San Francisco to purchase flood insurance.

Make them pay for their stupidity...

The oceans are rising at a rate of about a cm per century but California is sinking at a much faster rate.
