He was a Connecticut transplant thriving in his adopted city, a policy and politics wonk known to capture sun-basked monuments, cherry blossoms and the marble halls of power in Washington with his ever-present camera.
On July 4, Kevin Joseph Sutherland stepped onto the Metro to visit friends, but he never arrived at the gathering.
In an altercation police believe was the result of a robbery gone awry, Sutherland was stabbed to death aboard a train during the Saturday afternoon rush at the NoMa-Gallaudet U station on Florida Avenue NE.
... and he decorated his student government office at American University — where he advocated for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights — with posters depicting glam shots of pop star Lady Gaga...

It may have been different if he had supported gun rights and was armed?
Why do you assume he is going to prison? He is actually a “good boy” who is turning his life around. He has found Jesus. With the right judge he will be out and attending rehabilitation.
Their only courage is against those who bear them no ill will.

I know that area has gentrified substantially in recent years, but it still borders some very rough parts of town. I wouldn't walk in that neighborhood on weekends or at night without violating DC’s gun laws.
I guess his press credentials and his party membership card weren’t knife-proof...
It’s sad that Sutherland, after an extensive,full, and painful recovery, didn’t get to reflect on the fact that it’s his type of activism that allows and encourages such a class of feral subhumans to prey on everyone else.
A guy I know was near the location of the incident at that time. It was not good just a block away with kids chucking fireworks at cars. The gentrification is very localized.
He’s been arrested and charged with murder:

A witness on the train told police that the attacker tried to take an item from Sutherland's waist area, and the two struggled as the man repeatedly punched Sutherland until he fell to the floor and cried for help, according to the affidavit. The witness saw something in the attacker's hand and then noticed the man throw Sutherland's cellphone at him as Sutherland lay on the floor. A second witness saw the assailant stomp Sutherland as he lay on the floor after he was punched in the chest

After stabbing Sutherland, Spires then walked through the Metro car and asked a witness "what y'all got" and then rifled through a person's pants, taking a fare card and a wallet, according to the affidavit. The document says Spires took $65 from the wallet and threw the wallet and the fare card to the ground.
Sounds like the suspect turned his life around.
