Trump slams McCain for being ‘captured’ in Vietnam; other Republicans quickly condemn him

"He's not a war hero," Trump said. Sarcastically, Trump quipped, "He's a war hero because he was captured." Then, he added, "I like people that weren't captured."

Trump's comments came during his appearance at the Family Leadership Summit, a day-long gathering of about 3,000 social conservative activists that is drawing nine other Republican presidential candidates.

Trump talks about things like you or I would talk about them with family around the dinner table. That’s why he is able to speak so honestly and clearly about the big issues of the day. That same attribute can also lead to occasional gaffs. The gaffs are just part of the baggage with Trump. People will either have to decide that it’s a price worth paying or that it isn’t.

I missed the part where McCain defected as Benedict Arnold did.

Yep, just did a google search and he in fact did not defect. So you point is completely moot. He did speak poorly against the US... as he was being tortured. If you count that, then you must also think the american soldier who had his head brutally cut off with a dull knife in 2001 by Alkeida to be a loser, defector as well. He was forced to condemn the United States too. Then the mutilated him. Let’s all go and laugh at him and his family too.

You are right about how McCain conducted himself during his POW years. Please list how he helped this country since?

Agreed, but McCain called border enthusiasts “crazies”. McCain sucks as a Senator and he sucked as a Presidential candidate.

In my opinion, I (after having read some posts on here and different on line news outlets) that this is just what McCain and the liberals have been waiting for....

Donald doesn't speak ‘politician’ speak, he speaks OUR language, that's why some of us understand him, I feel that its time for the ‘Trump haters’ to jump on the bandwagon...

That's fine with me, they have a right to their opinions as I have a right to mine and you have a right to yours, but I like Trump because he isn't ‘bought and paid for by some lobbyists group’ he isn't a ‘political correct spineless sissy’ and I for one find his ‘speak’ refreshing and I like to listen to him...

Will he be ‘President’, I don't know, but so far I like him...and I like Cruz and I feel those two would be a ‘no nonsense’ ticket....

He is being attacked for his POW years. I’m not defending the politician. I’m defending someone who served his country. By a man who has never served.

This is the danger with Trump, is that he might overstep boundaries. Being a loose-cannon; away from the details of the subject.

That’s your opinion. I simply said sometimes being captured is unavoidable.

McCain served his country and suffered while doing that.

McCain is a low life scum of a politician.

Waiting to hear how Trump honorably served the nation during Vietnam. Certainly he served in the military, did he not? Because one couldn’t imagine he’d denigrate the service of those who did, right?

I hate to belabor this but it is important. Looking at this definition of "hero" Tell me the achievements and "noble" qualities McAmnesty had in POW camp? I will grant them all courage but what is nobel about fraternization with the enemy? he·ro ˈhirō/ noun 1. a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. "a war hero"

You are right, getting captured is unavoidable.

However graduating at the bottom of his war college class could have been avoided.
McCain could have also avoided the gang of 8 bill which is straight path of amnesty to illegals.

Thanks for shining the light of truth on McCain’s “heroism”. Not many people know McCain graduated at the exact bottom of his class from the war college. And his flying skills were so bad, he got shot down very quickly after getting assigned to bombing missions in Vietnam.

Trump could call mccain satan incarnate and it would be fairly close to the truth. So why should I care if he “insults” him?

The reaction, especially at FR, is more than a little telling. We’ve got a bunch of people who wouldn’t vote for Trump on bet acting all offended.

Save us the crocodile tears and melodrama.

Give McCain credit – he is the most consistently wrong politician ever, with a history of poor judgment that goes back to his penchant for crashing planes and extends throughout his career. - Bill Maher

Maher also remarked about McCain’s hero status for having got himself captured.

Trump runs a few enterprises that employ hundreds of people and pay millions of dollars in Federal taxes that McCain helps spend to the tune of Trillions of Dollars. IOW, Trump is useful and McCain is not.

McCain may have been a superb POW, but since then he's done this country a disservice. It is not heroic to milk your heroism for decades and that is what McCain has done.

You are missing the point 100%. Completely. I am not and will not defend McCain’s politics. Everyone keeps coming back to that for some lame reason.

The man is a veteran and is being attacked by a rich prick for no other reason than to keep his name in the news. He is attacking a veteren over his service and Trump has never served five minutes for the US.

I got your point. McCain conducted himself well during capture. Great! So, now what?
