Trump slams McCain for being ‘captured’ in Vietnam; other Republicans quickly condemn him
TheWashingtonPost.com ^ | July 18, 2015 | Philip Rucker

"He's not a war hero," Trump said. Sarcastically, Trump quipped, "He's a war hero because he was captured." Then, he added, "I like people that weren't captured."

Trump's comments came during his appearance at the Family Leadership Summit, a day-long gathering of about 3,000 social conservative activists that is drawing nine other Republican presidential candidates.

“While I’m not thinking it was particularly wise to say it...getting captured is not an achievement.”

I don’t care for most of McCain’s politics for sure. And, I agree that getting captured is no an achievement. But, what is an achievement and what McCain did that was honorable and brave is the way he conducted himself during his six years in captivity. That was very much an achievement. Trump really stepped in it this time.

You need to hear what Mr. T. said....don’t take the msm or fox for correct news....

UPDATE: Via The AP Trump responds to the backlash:

During a news conference after his appearance, Trump did not apologize but tried to clarify his remarks: “If a person is captured, they’re a hero as far as I’m concerned. I don’t like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate because he is not taking care of our veterans.”

Trump said he avoided service in the Vietnam War through student deferments and a medical deferment, then said he didn’t serve because “I was not a big fan of the Vietnam war.” He added he wasn’t a protester.

Thinkers will come to that conclusion

I have come to responding to threads that praise or include our "heroes" (military, the slain recruiters f'rinstance) with a clarification

Our military is volunteer

Heroes are someone that DO something amazing ... falling on a grenade, dragging a fallen warrior back under heavy enemy fire .... that sort of thing

And I believe our volunteers should get as much repect as a hero, though not for the same reason

Our military sat down at the kitchen table with mom and dad and said they wanted to be a Marine or soldier or pilot or whatever

Mom and dad, being a little more aware than their 17 yr old pimply face probably didn't want to hear this and may have made an attempt to talk him or her out of it .... but he would have none of it ...

HE OR SHE HAD MADE UP THEIR MIND

THEY MADE UP THEIR OWN MIND

THEY ACTUALLY THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE ENLISTING

Heroes usually are forced into a situation and many stories are told about NOT THINKING ASBOUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING

THAT'S why I've started commenting on our volunteers

Mr. Trump’s response is good enough for me and is 100% true. Americans need to make a stand no matter the person or his/her history. We were warned a long time ago to, “Beware of those who have eyes and cannot see and have ears and cannot hear.”

McVain has done so much damage to this country as a United States senator. This will get some airplay because anything Trump does or says makes the news, but it’s not a campaign ending statement because Trump isn’t gonna give two cents what the media and the GOPe writes or says in response to him.

mcain has been so wonderful for the united states.

And there are an endless number of things Trump could have justly criticized McCain for doing and sayin while he's been in office. Instead he had to disparage him for being a POW.

McCain was in position to get captured. Where was Trump?

McCain has long been suspected of suffering from an America hating brand of Stockholm sydrome and collusion with his captives, the illegals. Moderate republicans invariably treat islamists with kid gloves, same islamists that arab abroad now accuse us of grooming to be turned into ISIS terrorists attacking Syria. Our inability to correct illegals emboldens them and turns them to terrorism

McCain has gone to dinner on the POW thing for 50 years.
It’s often used to deflect ANY criticisms.

We are grateful for McCain’s service and sacrifice, but it really is way past time for him to JUST GO AWAY!
He is helping to destroy the country one step at a time.

POW doesn’t mean he’s not an A**hole.

Yeah but you can bet liberals will come to McCain’s defense now, not because they like him but because they will use this to put a wedge in the Republican Party..McCain tanked the 2008 campaign, said “We have nothing to fear from an Obama Presidency” and called Conservatives “Whacko birds” nuff said

Yes but only Trumps comments are on every front page of every website showing news. McCains comments were not even advertised. I only found out by some FRiends here who told me. Fair or not, Trump better do something or he is done.

Deceptive headline by. Trump merely pointed out that McCain was assigned heroism for being captured; he didn’t slam him for being captured.

getting captured is not an achievement.

No, but strapping yourself into a high performance fighter bomber, launching off a pitching aircraft carrier deck, and flying through deadly anti aircraft fire again, again, and again is quite an achievement. Have you ever tried it?

Now, go sit in a corner and say 500 times: I said something really stupid. Trump did as well.

“Donald Trump’s primary care physician must be a proctologist.’

Maybe so, but if that’s true,he’s over at McCain’s trying to remove Trump’s foot from McCain’s ass!

And as an aside, McCain was a terrible pilot. He only survived in the Navy because his father was an admiral. Prior to his capture, McCain had “lost” three other aircraft.

Those people at that Family Leadership Summit are the very sort of people that would elect Trump.

They loved the man!

That Luntz guy was a dick, Trump flattened him on that stage.

No one that stands strongly with McCain will ever vote for a conservative...they are Bushies. Trump didn’t give enough hell to McCain IMO. I have seen McCain stand up with enemies of America and grin like a possum[Syria and other places]... he is scum IMO. We lost in 08 because he is so pathetic... we have BO because of his mediocrity.

Perhaps McCain was just unlucky. Seem to recall an incident on the deck of the USS Forrestal with McCain in the cockpit when a missile on his fighter accidentally lit off and caused heavy casualties and damage. If my recollection is in error I will gladly be corrected.

How many of these freaks in DC used their political power to attract and marry rich women? McCain and Kerry come to mind first. I'm sure there's a butt-load more, after all, all politicians are good at selling themselves, in more ways than one.

Also, I read years back McCain is a 'reverse ace' having bent 5 birds during flight training, other incidents aside. I would reckon that McCain is as good an aviator as Kerry is a Swift Boater. Birds of a feather, so to snark, I mean, speak? Heh.

I think of war heroes as those that save others soldiers lives, or give their lives doing so, or are key to winning great battles. Now McCain was captured and survived torture. He saved his own life. He’s a war survivor. Does that make him a hero? I’ve never thought of him as one in the above sense.

What I could tell you about McCain would get me banned from this board. Suffice to say, I don't think Trump was much off the mark.

Trump should apologize to McCain when McCain apologizes for telling American voters that they had nothing to worry about with Obama.
