College Students Still Largely Misinformed About Ebola

Months after the Ebola virus outbreak of 2014 had briefly the U.S., American college students still understood little about the disease and how it spreads, a 2015 survey suggests.

"I was particularly surprised that almost a third thought you could get Ebola from mosquitoes, but this belief has also been echoed in the HIV literature," said Brandon Brown of the University of California Riverside School of Medicine, who coauthored a report about the survey in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Most students got less than half of the survey questions correct, Brown told Reuters Health by email.

If you gave the same crowd ten simple questions over the Constitution....what results do you anticipate? Just because one is in college....does not mean they are clever, astute, or intelligent.

All the problems facing our nation right now, and Ebola is what they talk about.

Yes. True. To me illegal aliens are a much more dire fact. But when there was a clear danger here last year, our health officials were saying “wash your hands” and you can only get it by direct touch contact.

Later in October 2014, the CDC head was forced to admit that it could be contracted from sneezing, coughing, etc.

This came out because IIRC Dr. Sanjay Gupta in an interview cornered Dr. Friedan with enough direct questions and Friedan finally admitted it could be sneeze-transmitted. It was after that the nation found out about the extraordinary precautions necessary to stop the spread.

Brown:

The students should have known that Ebola is only spread through direct contact with blood and body fluids and that you cannot get it via air, water or food, he said

Completely irresponsible if you ask me. To me that statement borders on criminally negligent. Evan Dr. Friedan (Head) of the CDC was finally forced to admit that it COULD be transmitted by a sneeze or cough through dispersed fluid droplets. Plenty of places to see on the web how far a sneeze blasts.

College students pay $100,000 for an education and graduate dumber than when they were freshmen. How's that happen? Eh, parents? Your young skull full of mush is stupider after four years and your bank account is $100,000 lighter. That's not a good trade in my book, especially when the graduate unemployment rate is 85% and your newly graduated offspring is living in your basement smoking weed and surfing porn sites on the Internet.

Oxymoron for the morons, college students are told by their deviant professors and think they are above the intellectual scale far above us single cell cave dwellers but the begining statement college students are misinformed is hillarious.

What disturbs me is that American college students must be concerned about contracting “Obola”. One more disgusting, reprehensible failure of obama, or as he would state “A fundamental change”.

Ebola should not even be a topic unless one is studying epidemiology but thanks to the jack@sses hell-bent on destroying America we should all know a lot about Ebola.

College students are largely misinformed about everything. That’s why they are students. They are kids just out of high school.

Yep.

IMHO, it goes soo much deeper than just developing “book” knowledge.

I blame the parents more than anyone.

Kids today don’t seem to have a lot of the basic understanding of “How” things work. I’m not talking about how to use their phone or twitter etc, they’ve got that mastered. Most kids today seem to be happy as “end-users” without the desire to learn how it works. They just know what the thing can do and how that will benefit them.

Setting aside electronics or Ebola, ask them how a car engine works? How a toilet works? Where does the water or electricity come from and how does it get here? How is it even possible to buy a calculator for less than $10? never mind a pack of Ramian noodles for $0.99?

Their minds are being fed this mush without any considerations of what it takes to provide them with the things that they take for granted.

They love their burgers but hate the Slaughterhouse.

They love their Iphones but hate strip mining.

They love their cars but hate the oil industry.

They love electronics but hate the coal industry.

They love their furniture but hate the loggers.

They love their freedoms but hate the Constitution.

We used to take on college students for summer help on construction jobs. Most of them can’t even read a ruler in my experience, don’t give them any measurements in 16 ths or 32nds they can’t figure it out.

My father went to the eighth grade and his first job as a teenager was helping a man to measure land. He learned enough to be able to eyeball most properties and estimate the acreage almost as closely as a surveyor could calculate it. I have not met a young man lately who even has any idea what an acre of land is. Most cannot tell you how many feet are in a mile, let alone how many acres are in a square mile. Tell them to square 5280 and divide the result by 640 to determine how many square feet are in one acre and they look at you as if you are an alien life form. I learned that in grade school. I would hate to be out shopping for a house and lot when the salesperson could point at a half acre lot and tell me it is two acres and get away with it. Don’t even mention history, they are lucky if they can name the country from which the 13 colonies separated to form the USA. Most could not tell you how many senators their state sends to congress, let alone name one of them.
