Donald Trump Calls Controversy Swirling Around Ben Carson 'Very Strange'

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump called the controversy swirling around his rival Ben Carson "very strange" Sunday, questioning stories Carson has told that have since been scrutinized.

Trump has questioned Carson several times about a childhood story in his autobiography "Gifted Hands" in which Carson described once trying to stab a friend or relative. He also questioned a story Carson has told about hitting his mother with a hammer.

“It's a strange situation when you talk about hitting your mother on the head with the hammer," Trump said on ABC's "This Week." "It's a weird deal going on and I hope it all works out because I don’t want to see Ben have problems over this stuff.”

On the campaign trail and in "Gifted Hands," Carson describes his teenage self as rage-filled and violent. But recent reports have questioned elements of that narrative and in new interviews, friends, neighbors and classmates from his childhood said the young man Carson describes is a far cry from the one they knew.

“I guess a book was written … before he was in politics, but he said he has 'pathological disease' in the book,” said Trump. “That's a very serious problem because that's not something that's cured. That's a very serious thing you have to live with.”

Trump is no stranger to these kind of accusations. He has been questioned about his actual worth, and in his own book “The Art of The Deal,” he wrote, “A little hyperbole never hurt." But when pressed about his exaggerations, he turned the conversation back to Carson.

I doubt Donald ever experienced a religious conversion. That’s the context of Carson’s stories. He belongs to a very strict sect, and what he says in he book is like a religious confession.

Exaggerating about one’s income or success in business is pretty common, but exaggerating about being violent and antisocial is unusual.

Dr. Carson has policy problems that will be scrutinized, particularly if he endorses statehood for Puerto Rico tomorrow.

Carson might think that's a clever ploy to counteract Mr. Trump's Immigration policies, and the avenue to increase Carson's standings in the Polls by attracting Latino support, but he will lose more Conservative support than he gains in Latino support IF he goes ahead and endorses statehood for Puerto Rico.

Not characteristics you generally seek out in Presidential nominee. :-)

Gifted hands was published in 1990. Recollection of two individuals of the same event may be very different.

Trump is in a difficult position he’s not used to be in. He want to milk the situation but he also know its a lie. If I was him, don’t go there. It will show a level of desperation from his part if he use it to attack Carson, which is not needed.

you would only focus on those characteristics if you are myopic.

I think after his exposure on SNL last night, which was almost entirely positive IMO, he would not serve his own interest by attacking Ben at this point. His better course of action will be to work on convincing Ben’s supporters to embrace his message and agenda for when Ben inevitably drops out. It seems very likely that Trump is going to be the nominee. I know Democrats that are crossing over for him. His message is resonating like an idea whose time has finally come.

The book was meant to be biographical. As such, facts should've been carefully researched. If that was not the case an intro should've explained that the book is "vague recollections" and that names have been changed. Where ever possible, the author should sit down with someone who had intimate knowledge of the situations and had them fact check it.

Dr. Carson is blaming practices of the media when they're actually doing something right, striving for accuracy, how ironic.

Besides which, Trump's wealth because of the nature of real estate, is subjective. Everyone agrees he's a multi-billionaire. Nobody is denying that he turned the boycott of pageants into financial gold. Carson's facts on the other hand are objective.

Why did Dr. Carson think he could run for President and his past wouldn't be scrutinized? At the very least he should've come clean about the inaccuracies in his narrative before the nomination process brought them to light.

The fact that it was published 25 years ago is a reason to expect better recollections than one might expect now. It's not a valid excuse for sloppy autobiographical writing.

Yes, Carson is imploding all by himself without any nudge from Trump. As they say, never try to interfere when a enemy (or in this case a competitor) is committing suicide.

Your first sentence is wrong. The book was meant to be inspirational.

I did not know Ted Cruz has a Bush connection. He worked on George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign as a domestic policy adviser and served in the Bush administration as associate deputy attorney general in the Justice Department and director of policy planning in the Federal Trade Commission.

You shoud’nt try to inspire people by stretching the truth. The good doctor should have known that when runs as a republican for president, there will be a media anal exam to follow.

Honesty or youthful indiscretion? If the guy was still walking around wacking people with hammers I would agree with you. But childhood acts ought not to warrant a life-long scarlett letter.

Carson’s kissing up to Sharpton or be it the other way or both ways turned me off. That so much political mulch is being made just adds to a confusion.
