They've shooed pipeline surveyors from their pastures, made anti-pipeline signs for a protest at the county courthouse and at appearances by the Virginia governor. They've also kept up pressure on local officials.
As the leader in this multigenerational band of family activists, Carolyn Reilly has found the experience exhilarating and bruising.
"There are days when I am in tears in frustration and exhaustion," she said. "Then there are days when I'm fired up and ready to fight."
From New England to North Carolina, scattered insurgencies have formed in opposition to a spider web of pipelines up and down the Eastern Seaboard as the nation's energy industry seeks to move pent-up natural gas supplies.
Behind the pipeline boom: vast deposits of natural gas being drilled in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio and ready for shipment to U.S. and international markets.
"Essentially, the takeaway is they're re-plumbing the whole United States," said Timothy R. Carr, a West Virginia University geologist.

Nimbys will always be with us, as well as bananas.
These are the kind of oikophobes who will vote
a town dry, and then move.
LOL! I know right? Some people are totally clueless when it comes to the amount of infrastructure that already exists. So, my idea is to cut off any natural gas or fuel oil to those that so oppose these things. Wood stoves? Sorry, epa rules.
with regard to the yankees, let them freeze in the dark
They figure that they can watch TV by candle light.
TV by candlelight. I like that.
I am still waiting for all of these people to bury their cars. Until they do I cant hear them...nana nana nana!
“Carr, the West Virginia geologist, said the current energy options are imported oil, natural gas or coal, with wind and solar still decades away from filling the gap.
“Those are your choices,” he said. “Or maybe you don’t want your lights turned on.””
Well, the very best way to turn the lights on is by electricity supplied by nuclear power.
This is indeed the crux of the matter. Pipelines and natural gas are a relatively clean and cost effective source of energy. Of course we could cut the flow and wear sweaters (The Jimmy Carter solution) and we could also cut immigration if we want to stop using energy. Does the protest movement extend to this idea?
But the truth is that if we really want to claim the high ground in the energy climate game, we need to move to an all electrical society where electricity is generated by hydraulic and nuclear forces. And even when this is done, we will probably use some fuel in fossil form -- think planes and trucks?
Of course the climate model game should also be validated before this action becomes mandatory. But we could start the process and use natural gas as the bridging energy (and supplement with coal as we learn to scrub the emissions from coal plants. All of this is coming down the road.
In the meantime, it is cold in the winter, and a little natural gas heater is awfully nice on a cold night.

Then freeze in the dark,,, broke, with no pipeline check in the mail.
Let ‘em FREEZE..............................
There are gas lines up and down every street in America.
The poor snowflake!
No, not in many locations.
Older neighborhoods put in before Nat Gas was offered in the area often go decades without Natural Gas being offered. It can be hard to get enough folks to switch at one time to justify the cost.
I wonder who has a friend in the railroad business today?
This pipeline and the others referenced are transporting Natural Gas.
Keystone XL was only mentioned to grab headline attention.
Ummmm.... Does the name Warren Buffet sound familiar
