Why Do Parents Hate Paying College Tuition? Meet Missouri Professor Melissa Click

Thanks to a student’s YouTube video, University of Missouri Assistant Professor Melissa Click has become of symbol of what many parents dread when they send their children off to college. From her bullying of students to her doctoral thesis on the whiteness of Martha Stewart and her classes in “visual literacy,” she crystalizes the view that tuition dollars are spent on nonsense, and sometimes worse. As Missouri high school students prepare their applications this fall, they are looking at paying over $25,000 for a year on campus and non-residents will have to pay over $40,000.

When the president of MU and the chancellor of the main campus in Columbia stepped down Monday following protests that they were insensitive to racial issues, Click and other members of the faculty went to work enforcing their self-created ban on the media. Click was captured on video harassing student journalists and calling in “muscle” to prevent one from documenting the tent city that had gone up on the campus quad, a public area that was known as a “safe space.”

That an assistant professor of “mass media” in the department of communication was unaware of the instantaneous power of YouTube and social media is another reason for parents to wonder about the wisdom of spending their money on Click. She teaches in the College of Arts and Sciences rather than the vaunted School of Journalism, but that didn’t keep fans of the First Amendment from weighing in. The National Press Club called on the university to advise students and staff that they shouldn’t keep reporters from reporting “and certainly not through physical force or threats.”

There are too many state funded colleges. If colleges were 100% funded by the students and their families they would operate differently, and be more effective in what should be their primary goal of teaching kids and preparing them to make a living in the real world.

first problem, she is a faculty member and the person she wanted to use muscle against was a student.

second problem, the tent city probably wasn't what she was trying to hide. She would be proud of that. There's something else she was hiding...any ideas?..

The University model is also obsolete. The internet makes such archaic institutions hopelessly inefficient, expensive, elitist, obstructive and destructive of productivity.

The education racket is a living fossil, and long overdue for some serious restructuring.

I urge Freepers to read our chapter on the 1960s in "A Patriot's History of the United States." We predicted this---when money meets students meets leftist profs, the result is there can be no education. We argue that the riots and destruction at universities in the 1960s would have occurred without Vietnam. It was a convenient catalyst, but those collapses were inevitable given the vast and rapid expansion of leftist profs (partly in reaction to "McCarthyism" and the firing of profs with commie-related pasts).

What NO ONE seems to be commenting on is that the key event was that it was the FOOTBALL team that effected the change and once football programs everywhere---especially at OSU, Texas, Georgia, FSU, FL and other schools that are particularly football focused---realize what power they really have, they will start shutting down schools or threatening not to play unless they get what they want. I don't think it will be PC changes. I think these teams will start demanding to get paid or force other non-PC changes. The point is, it won't be about "issues" or "violations of civil rights" but will be about $$.

Not so shockingly, you don’t see this type of thing at ‘business colleges’ - that’s because they don’t give cushy tenured positions to random degree programs. They also don’t have the massive debt of retirement promises that the people will end up picking up later on (unless sanity reigns and new leaders step forward to say ‘tough, you want your money, go sue the people who never bothered to pay for it. We make our own budgets and meet OUR promised obligations.’)

Isn’t Click the one who was ‘crying behind closed doors’ yesterday when the journalist asserted their right to be there? Something like that? Perhaps that gives her a lawsuit for ‘hurt feelings’ or whatever the legal term for whining is. Should be a 1$M settlement from the U president coming. Maybe they’ll give her that job.

She got her PhD from the Department of Communication at the University of Mass at Amherst. I think that pretty much explains everything. New Englanders have a very smug self-righteous attitude about them, and reek of “I’m superior to you, and you should run your life the way I say you should.” It was her kind that stoked the fires of civil war, and are often caught doing it again.

Why do parents so hate their own children to the degree that they willingly pay to have them abused at the hands of liberals? If parents want to do that, I don’t understand why they didn’t just abort them to begin with and put their saved cash towards more expensive toys they obviously care more about.
