If youâre at risk of prostate cancer â in other words, if youâre male â the best place to be is the United States, where survival rates are highest in the world. But not for long, if the Obama administration gets its way in curtailing a test that flags prostate cancer before it spreads.
The administration wants to penalize doctors who routinely order the PSA blood test. Under a proposed policy, those doctors will get demerits for being considered over-spenders, while doctors who skip the test will be rewarded with a high âqualityâ rating from the government â and be paid more.

Not surprised that the king’s dole is stupidly administered.
But again, beware the distraction. Obama has managed to get people debating on how fair Obamacare is rather than whether there should even BE an Obamacare.
Somewhere out in the great “flyover country,” there exists individuals who are nearing their breaking points ... In that regard, I predict that within the next 12 months, Obama is very likely to contract a lethal case of lead poisoning. But then again I could be wrong.

I had the same radiation time line. Forty two days,
They even put gold slivers in my prostate so they could better target the prostate while I was on the machine.
You can remove a prostate for about $35,000.
Prostate Radiation for 42 days and preparations and yearly follow ups put the bill close to $170,000.
When I was in there getting radiated, I met 3 people who had their prostates removed years earlier and were back in for radiation in the prostate area. -Tom
If Barack Obama were vaporized by a ray from outer space tomorrow, there would still be, what, how many million more fools left?
Depending on his philosophy he might even WANT to get scape goated, because then that helps the cause that trucks on with him as figurehead. By all means blame Barack Obama. Don’t blame the idiots who either let him get where he did, or who voted to do it.
My doc told me a couple weeks ago that not only does he now recommend against the PSA test, he has also stopped the “digital” test as well. He says that the meta-analysis (study of studies) has revealed no conclusive correlation between either test result and early detection of prostate cancer. He says that the tests often yield false positives which lead to unnecessary surgeries that actually cause more problems for the patient.
He was willing to administer the “digital” exam if I wanted, but I took a pass (this was a short pre-op physical for foot surgery).
It was a shock to hear his recommendations. I was skeptical and my initial reaction was the clinic is bowing to federal pressure to reduce costs. This article tends to support my suspicion.
Has anybody else on an HMO or PPO had their doc tell them this?
Thanks Connor, Who would have thought a Marine (me) would live to be 63, let lone 67. Semper Fi. Colon cancer got my old uncle Leon, a veteran that walked Okinawa and back again. You must have had doctors you trusted. I can’t say the same for the reprobates I’ve been exposed to. May we live long brother.
This is where having a free market again would be helpful. Even if the tests are not so good, people could choose them according to their own judgment. And in the meantime the medical science has an incentive to progress. Someone who comes up with a slightly better test can sell it for a higher price, etc.
Are you forgetting who's running the insane asylum?
HIFU...and early detection via PSA saved my husband what you had to endure...but he had to go to Mexico for it because our nefarious government hadn’t approved hifu...as Europe and Mexico had. Cost was $26k...no radiation...no drugs...and no side effects.
Every participant that wants it gets a PSA blood test and they mail you the results and a comparison to prior years if you are a regular participant free.
Shoot, you can even get a paternity test kit at Walmart for about $25. They're on the bottom shelf near the diabetic testing supplies.
This is the exact reason I was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer with 8 bone mets in Sept, 2014. It’s treatable, but it will eventually kill me based on today’s research and treatment options.
Had I gotten the biopsy I should have been told I needed a year earlier, I would have had a complete cure.
PSA level along with a DRE is the best tool to use to determine if you should have a biopsy. Once your PSA hits 2.5, you should consider a biopsy, especially if has increased over the previous year. In every case, you need a biopsy when it hits 4.0. Don’t ask for one, demand it. It could save your life.
I know all this from personal experience.
Good for you. I refuse all cancer-related screening and diagnostic tests. I’ll live longer this way because if I had a test and it came back positive I’d put a hole in my head that same night. Would be tragic if it were a false positive.
HIFU has just been approved by the FDA in the past two months. First was the SONACARE machine, an American product, and 2 weeks ago the ABLATHERM device made by EDAP TMS SA, a French company, was approved. Both companies announced sales soon after approval, and I expect HIFU will become the gold standard in prostate ablation.
EDAP has applied for approval of their newest device, the FOCAL ONE, which does the ultrasonic ablation and MRI simultaneously, for a much more accurate job. I expect the FOCAL ONE will be approved in the near future, now that the HIFU technique has been approved, and it will become the best prostate cancer treatment available. The FOCAL ONE had already been approved in the EU and Canada, and success rates are around 85%, with negligible side effects.
I own lots of EDAP shares, which are still cheap, and have read many discussions of why it took so long to gain FDA approval. Consensus is that the FDA panel is overly controlled by surgeons, and prostate surgery is their bread and butter business. Further, there are, surprisingly, many urologists who are not even aware of the success of HIFU.
You can get a PSA test for under $80. Do it.

“I refuse all cancer-related screening and diagnostic tests.”
Me too! A study found that men over 65 years old don’t live any longer by getting an operation.
I also read on the internet that some men that have as much as 100 PSA don’t have cancer and some men that have 0 PSA do have cancer.
