Keeping the interior intact & habitable is one thing.
Getting out after the blast is another. Considering radiation issues, you won’t be in a hurry.

I also posted this advice the other day, but it bears repeating:

If you watch this thread you will see that even on FR there are those who hate and scoff at those who would be prepared to take care of their own should a shtf event occur. They like to claim they are not worried,because nothing is going to happen, some even say things like if it happens I just rob the preppers for my needs. When called on their words they claim they are only joking, but in my experience people who try to mask their words by claiming that they are only joking are only trying to cover the slip of the real them that came out in their words.

When push comes to shove you would surprised what people who claim they don’t care will do to cling to life. One of the most dangerous groups that preppers will have to deal with are the anti-preppers, because they will not only covet what preppers have they will feel the need to punish preppers for having prepared and will feel morally justified in punishing preppers as in their twisted minds they will see the reason that the SHTF event occurred was because they dared prep for it. Their envy and indignation will be like that of leftist have for people who strikes out works hard and makes a good living or even gets well off and not sharing with them.

Fro the preppers who survive the first month after the collapse, they will be surprise whom they will have to use their bullets on, to prevent being robbed and murdered. The time to listen is now. These dead souls are not a secret.

20kT is about equal to the Hiroshima blast, which did leave buildings standing near ground zero.

It would have left more standing if it had not been detonated at approx. 1900 feet above the surface. That maximized the design's destructive potential.

The nuclear missile silos that I recall reading about had a column of sand which would be released onto the floor so that the crew could escape through the emptied column.

These miscreants probably also believe that Global Warming was the cause of the Paris attacks.

Looks like the “kitchen” is essentially a few cabinets up against the wall by the dining table.

I’d rather be hunkered down in the middle of a forest. With the option to be mobile and relocate if necessary.

The maintenance crew will take over when it hits the fan. But, hey, thanks to the millionaires for building it for them.

We see many of those types being portrayed in current TV entertainment - the “Walking Dead” stands out most.

The “wolves”, who are nothing more than agents of chaos;

The “claimers”, who were basically lowlifes before the collapse, and can now live and take what they please;

The Governor, a twisted man in real life who allwoed his inner sociapoath to emerge.

There were people on FR who are self-described preppers, and there was a thread on it.

If I were that doofus, I would steer clear of the type of Freepers contributing to that thread. Some of them were just the standard Internet warriors, but some of them...not so much (if you can believe ANY Freeper profiles...)

See post #15 this thread. I have encounter some of these types on FR and have warned of them.

Hat Tip to Old Sarge for the heads up.

The cartoon I posted in Post 14 and the comments in post 15 demonstrate why I just cannot bring myself to open the subject of preps and defense with neighbors and acquaintances with whom we are friendly but not close. We know them to say hello to but have no idea about them, their attitudes, deeper loyalties, etc.

I know that in a SHTF catastrophe a group stands a better chance than a lone individual or a small family of 2 or 3. However we have no close friends among our neighbors or nearby with whom we can team and share confidential information.

I don't want to share prepper and defense info and make plans with a neighbor who is just a casual acquaintance only to find that he is not self reliant or has greater loyalty to an extended family or group that will show up on D-Day with no supplies but plenty of hungry kids and enough manpower to take what they want.

For that reason we keep our own confidences and plan on going it alone as long as possible. I figure that when the time comes people will show their true colors and we will decide who can be trusted, who is worth teaming with, and who is not.

Lots of wisdom in your post.

Every plan made for these events will become obsolete the second after it occurs.

That is the only thing we can be sure about.

Going it alone will be ok for some amount of time. Then maybe people will be sent to help you or you will be sent to help someone. I assume there is a plan that will hold up and it’s only his plan that we need to follow.

Thanks for the encouraging reply.

In a nutshell, here is my thinking on letting others know about weapons, food stores and other preps.
