The man who saved a co-worker by shielding her with his body during the San Bernardino shooting was remembered in an emotional funeral on Saturday. Shannon Johnson, 45, of Los Angeles, received a hero's funeral in his home state of Georgia 10 days after the attack where he and 13 others were killed in California. One of the health inspector's colleagues wounded in the attack, Denise Peraza, said later that Johnson wrapped an arm tightly around her as bullets went flying and assured her: 'I got you'.k

Johnson's last words to co-worker Denise Peraza, 27 (right), were 'I got you' as he held the young woman and shielded her from gunfire. Peraza said that she would have likely died if not for Johnson (left)

As it usually is in war—we lose too many of our best.

That is why Shannon Johnson is no victim. Like Todd Beamer, Shannon Johnson’s death defined the man.
A hero in the truest sense of the word.
