S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley, coming off a year where she gained national attention for her handling of the Charleston church mass shooting, will deliver the Republican response to the State of the Union address on Jan. 12, The State has learned.
Haley is calling her nationally televised speech an “address†rather than a “response†as they have been called since they began in 1966. She is the first South Carolinian to deliver the State of the Union response.
The Lexington Republican, considered a possible vice presidential pick, is heading to the middle of her second term as governor in a state that holds the first presidential primary in the South. The daughter of Indian immigrants has been called a rising star in the party since she became South Carolina’s first woman and first minority governor.
Her stature grew since the summer after she called for removing the Confederate battle flag from the State House grounds after a state senator and eight other parishioners were gunned down at Emanuel AME Church on June 17. An avowed racist was charged in the killings that shocked the nation.

She gave up the Confederate battle fag because she was resentful of the way America treated her father. Anyone who holds any hope for the GOP as representing body for patriotic Americans are going to be disappointed.
There is nothing decent about a first-generation immigrant enabling the destruction of US history and culture.

She was bandied about as the VP pick on Fox News Sunday.
I hope not. She would kill and chances the GOP had in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Unions may not have the power they once did but they still have influence in those three states. Plus she'll get bogged down in Confederate flag questions. Cruz can do better than her for a running mate.

Haley was born and raised as a Sikh. On September 6, 1996, she married Michael Haley in both a Methodist church ceremony and a Sikh gurdwara. Haley identifies herself today as a Christian, but attends both Sikh and Methodist services. She sits on the board for Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.
