BAGHDAD – Gunmen set off a car bomb at the entrance to a mall in mainly Shiite eastern Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 10 people and wounding 25 as the attackers raced inside and took hostages, Iraqi officials said.

Police and medical officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters, estimated that 50-75 people were trapped inside the Jawhara mall.

Iraq was a prosperous place once upon a time.

Maybe before King Faisal II was killed. Or maybe before the Baath Party took over. Or maybe before Saddam took over. Or maybe before Saddam invaded Kuwait. Whatever their level of prosperity, Saddam used to hunt Kurds and Shiites for fun and profit. At least now, when Sunni murderers come calling, Kurds and Shiites have the machinery of the state at their disposal to fight back. Note that since the invasion of Iraq, its per capita GDP has quadrupled. Nobody's complaining about starving babies anymore.

Only under your deluded way of thinking do you think Iraq is better off now than it was under any of those earlier Iraq regimes. And as for hunting of Kurds - the State Dept of Reagan and Bush supported this on both sides of the Iraqi-Turkish border until the invasion of Kuwait.
