Old saying is follow what politicians do, not what they do. In the span of one week, Cruz has did a 180 on his entire campaign strategy. He was basically Trump's mini-me for 6 months. He wouldn't attack. He was praising him everywhere he went. His entire self-admitted strategy caught on tape with donors was to shower him with love.
In the course of one week, he's gone to attacking him on twitter, to attacking him to reporters, to attacking him at his rallies and now a major negative TV ad campaign.
Confident campaigns do not do such 180 degrees shifts in one week.
Campaigns worried they are losing Iowa do such things. The birther thing is hurting badly and Cruz is going full Jeb Bush on Trump.

Or he’s responding to Trump attacking him on about a dozen issues.
Now that election is weeks away, now is the time to go on the attack when you’re 2nd. It was his strategy all along

It started over the holidays. Cruz’s campaign changed. He got annoyingly aggressive about soliciting money.
You had to know the gloves were going to come off sooner or later. I’m a little surprised it’s taken this long.

Well the opposite Trump went birther on Cruz when he fell 10 pts behind in a poll in Iowa and tied Trump is 1 poll in SC. Cruz has responded to attack Trump for his liberal statements over the years.
Trump currently trails Cruz in a 1 on 1 match up as per Gallup this week. Trump need to land a knock out blow on Trump begore the field thinks out.
We shall see which strategy works.
