A Semi-Automatic Handgun Ban Wouldn’t Stop Mass Shooters
National Review ^ | January 20, 2016 | John R Lott Jr

Posted on 01/20/2016 3:06:30 AM PST by richardb72

President Obama’s timing is off. Just as he tries to assure us that there’s no conspiracy to take away our guns, Democrats across the country are calling for banning most firearms.

From Georgia to California, Democratic legislators have introduced bills to ban all semi-automatic rifles or even all semi-automatics, period. In the New York Times this month, Thomas Friedman called for “bans on the manufacture and sale of all semi-automatic and other military-style guns.” The city council of Lexington, Mass., is seeking to “ban the ownership of semi-automatic or fully automatic weapons able to hold ammunition clips containing more than ten rounds.”

Well over half of the guns sold in the U.S. are semi-automatic. And, if a gun can accept a magazine, that magazine can be of pretty much any size. So the “ten round” rule is meaningless. So, with the exception of a few specialty guns, these rules would in effect ban all semi-automatic guns.

This Democrat goal is nothing new, of course — in 1998, Illinois state senator Barack Obama supported a “ban on the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons” — but for years, gun-control advocates wanted to ban guns based on appearances. Now, instead of arbitrarily going after guns because of how they look, Democrats are at least being logically consistent and talking about banning guns based on how they function. . . .

Billions of guns have been manufactured over the last century. Probably half are still in shootable condition in an attic or basement. If somebody somewhere wants a semi-auto they will find it. Outlawing them takes away easy access for people not obsessed with killing but who need to defend themselves against those who are.

It’s not about stopping mass shootings.

It’s about removing the ability of citizens to protect themselves from their government.

It’s about removing the ability of citizens to protect themselves from their government from a progressive tyranny organized by the DemocRAT party.

I am not concerned as much from mass shootings from guns. They are easy to defend against if there is enough armed citizens available to shoot the person before they shoot the next round. I am concerned about the device that does the mass killing in one event, like spraying down people with gasoline and setting them off. There’s no stopping the next round from being fired here. And gasoline is more available than guns. That’s just gasoline. Then there are poison gas attacks and things they can detonate. Don’t forget biological attacks. When you think of all the other possibilities—and that is not hard to do—why is this obsession with guns in the first place? The obsession must be a form of mental illness. If they are mentally ill, we must take their guns away from them first.

Dictators can’t exist with an armed population. Make no mistake, every career politician is a dictator at heart, and they know disarming the citizenry is a step to more power and control.

This crap will never end until they finally get down to seizing our BB guns and sling shots.

Disputes between the robber and robberee will be settled by vicious fights with nerf bats. Once settled, a 6 month course will be mandatory for each combatant to learn peace and harmony along with race propaganda.

Under the proposed law this is a semi-automatic gun, one trigger pull results in one shot.

The KEY THING is to we need to CATALOG these gun-grabbing attempts, as the left keeps telling us that they “do not want to take our guns”.

There are plenty of examples to prove otherwise.

The Virginia Tech mass shooting is the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history and one of the deadliest by a single gunman worldwide.

Weapons used? Weak little .22 caliber and 9mm pistols. No exotic ammo. No scary black rifles. Just two pistols, a head full of crazy, and a GUN-FREE ZONE (iow, a target rich environment).

I am more afraid of the federal and state governments and their continued assault on the Constitution than I am of being in a mass shooting or terrorist attack. KCAC.

When people call for bans on semi-auto handguns I point out that Ronald Gene Simmons, of Dover Arkansas murdered sixteen people. He strangled and drowned half of them, the others he shot with a Ruger single action six shot .22 pistol.

Richard Speck murdered eight student nurses back in 1966. His weapon, strangulation and a knife. He also had a cheap Rhomm .22 which he did not use.

Charles Whitman who murdered 16 people, wounded many more, most with a bolt action hunting rifle and a sawed off shotgun.

Calls to ban semi-autos is again just an attempt to throw a law against the wall and see if it sticks. From there they will then move on to ban all handguns and eventually rifles.

The Georgia liberal Democrat proposal won’t even make it out of committee.

As with other crack-brained bills like this, he's only pandering to his base - "See? I tried. Now vote for me again . . ." (. . . "the job market out there is crap."

Here's my cut-and-paste reply comment to those antis who pull the snarky "Oh, you gun nuts are SO paranoid.".

"I love that "paranoia" meme you anti-gun people often come up with.

Month after month, year after year, gun owners are besieged with all kinds of crack-brained anti-gun laws proposed by the Democrats:
$25 per firearm and 15c per round tax, $10,000 fine for failure to report a lost or stolen firearm, psychological exams for all gun buyers, an "arsenal license" if you have more that 1,000 rounds (two bricks of .22 ammo), license and/or fingerprint buyer of ammo, ban more than the purchase of one gun a month, three/seven/ten day "cooling off" period even in this day of instant background checks, "ballistic fingerprinting" of every firearm (as useful as "fingerprinting" car tires), ban small, cheap, easily concealed lightweight guns ("Saturday Night Specials""), no wait, ban large, expensive, cumbersome heavyweight long-range target rifles a la Quigley Down Under ("sniping rifles"), ban guns with pistol grips, ban guns with flash hiders, ban guns with bayonet lugs, ban eeevil-looking military look alike semi-autos, ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds (7 in NY), ban hollow-point bullets ("Cop Killer" ammo), ban lead bullets, etc.,etc.

I could fill this whole page with this litany of lunacy. Then when the gun owners yell "Hey! Wait a minute!', the smug retort is "Oh, you gun nuts are SO paranoid."

Hear the latest?
California Law Allows Seizure of Guns without Notice if a judge determines there's potential for violence.
Connecticut Bill #122: Restrict All Gun Ownership to A Single Shot
Ban anyone under 12 from gun shows
Scan license plate tags of those attending gun shows"

One anti couldn't refute any of these so he just snarked "Oh, you made my eyes glaze over."

I replied, "What the Hell did you think my eyes did when I read all those Democratic proposals?"

crickets.
